A lot has been going in the last few months. Work (reviews!) and the new book store have kept me really busy. Hence, the lack of a post since December 4th.Unfortunately, since I last posted, we lost Alice Coltrane. I had planned to use this poster from a 1982 concert some time ago, but it fell victim to the hiatus. This concert featured the three sons of John and Alice Coltrane - John, Jr. on b...

Is it because your megalomania needs a larger audience? Is it because your egotism is seeking escape from solipsism? Or is it bec...

Think about it. It's a gorgeous hot August night. Your phone's blowing up with requests to go here and there because your twenty-something friends still get drunk on Monday nights. What would you do? The possibilities are endless.Did you answer "Lay in bed alone with strep throat" like I did? Probably not. Summer illness? The first time I've had strep since middle school? This fucking sucks. My...

There was so much on the web - the podcasts and the mp3 blogs - about the passing of Alice Coltrane, that I felt it best to wait. For me, the irony of her death is that I always wanted her rendition of "Going Home" to be played at my funeral. "Going Home" is the final track on Lord of Lords, first released on vinyl in 1973 by Impulse!. The album is only available on CD in Japan (released in ...

in addition to her work in her husband's groups, Alice made some seriously lush and enveloping music on her own... most of what i have is on vinyl and not portable to work but for the last couple days on cd i've been rocking my favorite, Ptah the El Daoud - Joe Henderson and Pharoah Sanders together is pretty much a tenor and flute dream team! - and the live Transfiguration from '78. Alice can ...

Probably one of the most perfect songs for morning meditation- Alice Coltrane's Journey In Satchidananda. If I had one of those morning alarm clocks that can play songs to wake you up, this is certainly what I would pick. I would be late every morning putting the song on repeat, but it would be well worth it!It's funny thinking about how appreciating artists in their proper context can tota...

I posted twice in the past about Alice Coltrance (here and here) but an article in the New York Times this weekend made me realize I needed to share some music...The article was the Times' coverage of a concert and memorial service held this past week, the Alice Coltrane Ascension Ceremony, at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City. I did not attend, in fact was not even a...

RIP ALICE COLTRANE..

Well, as you die hard jazz cross-over fans already know Alice Coltrane died this weekend. Sadly, I can't say I ever was lucky enough to see Alice Coltrane, but what a force to be reckoned with. I have always loved the transcendental nature of her music and I recognize her sound within 10 seconds when it comes on, whether it's radio, a house party or a club, her musical message cuts through th...

I absolutely love this woman's music, passion and spirituality. Her album "Universal Consciousness" is very important to me. I heard her perform in late 2006 and I was deeply touched by the experience. Being in her presence is somthing that I wil never forget. Love and blessings to the Coltrane family.

...has been fairly active recently, releasing an album in 2004 and actually performing live a few times a year. The occasion of what would have been John Coltrane's 80th birthday has drawn her back to the stage as well. There is a nice online exclusive with Alice on the Way Poetics site - part interview, part profile, part tribute. You don't have to love her music or even jazz in general to groov...
