I went to see Alejandro Escovedo last week, an amazing artist whose Boxing Mirror was one of my favorite albums last year. The Boxing Mirror is all about Escovedo's year from hell, the year his father died and he himself almost passed away, too, after collapsing at a performance of In His Hands from complications of hepatitus C. One of the very cool things about The Boxing Mirror is its use of strings, so it was doubly interesting to see Escovedo backed by his "string qu... MORE

I've been working in this office for over 4 months now and found out this morning that there is a CD Cellar almost touching my office building, needless to say I am totally ecstatic. On my lunch break I managed to pick up Janis Joplin- I Got Dem Ol' Kosmic Blues Again Mama! (for the second time, some fortunate soul has my first copy, and may I telk you around here at least that album is nearly impossible to find) and off of a recommendation from a fellow Mogger I can't qui... Alejandro Escovedo played The Aladdin Theater in Portland last Friday - having seen Alejandro a number of times and since the Aladdin is a sit down theater type of venue I was expecting the acoustic string quartet version of his show. I was completely wrong - he blew the roof off of the place and had people dancing in the aisles. The 'orchestra' was rock band plus cello (which if you've been reading you know I like) plus apple laptop. His most recent CD (The Boxing Mirror... MORE

I'll keep this short because it's almost 1 am and I have to be at work in a few hours (yes, on a Sunday). Alejandro Escovedo was simply amazing Friday night, though I would expect nothing less from him. I’ve seen him maybe seven times now and I’ve only seen one bad show. (But, wow, that show was bad.) The new guitarist (Jon Dee Graham’s replacement) is an incredible player. Jon Dee who? The new celloist is stunning — and it’s great fun to watch him and Alejandro fee... MORE

If you haven't heard Alejandro Escovedo's new one, The Boxing Mirror, do yourself a favor and go listen to it. Beautiful, heartfelt, and rockin' music. Go see him live, too. Once you've listened a few dozen times, you can head on over to neumu and read Jennifer Kelly's piece about Alejandro and my review of The Boxing Mirror (I'm not above the occasional shameless plug!).
