The new Alejandro Escovedo album is excellent. Alejandro was in the '70s punk band The Nuns, then played guitar in Rank & File before launching a long and creative solo career which continues. Dig this one.
While waiting for my LP of Real Animal to arrive at my local record shop, I have had to make due with what ever tracks I have been able to scavenge from the net at the moment. I am kind of a late comer to the Alejandro Escovedo party... but not really, as I have been a fan of his past fans bands, The Nuns and Rank'n'File for some time... but after reading a lot about him and his records I picked up The Boxing Mirror while on vacation in Hawaii several years back. The tr... MORE
I purchased my first album based purely on a Mogger's recommendation a few days ago. I can't add anything to Mike The Knife's perfect review. http://mog.com/Mike_the_Knife/blog_post/172158 Thank God he's not dead. This world needs Alejandro Escovedo. To hear music this carefully crafted, this damn cared about, is a truly unexpected treat. 8/10 Thanks Mike...I owe you one.
I'm recovering from the end of year picnic and mom announces that its time for a family walk. Dressed, leashes on, find a Jawbreaker record (DGC first pressing/colored vinyl) and a Lenny Bruce box that Rhino released in the 90s that are gathering dust, and off we go. Get to Amoeba get $25 credit and grab "Real Animal." A lot of good songs: Smoke, Sensitive Boys (Is this Young Americans) Nuns Song (remember Hate Holiday? Great San Francisco band from the early 90s, ... MORE
It finally arrived... my LP of Real Animal, only it's really 2 LP, and it includes two tracks that are not on the CD.... I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but it looks great, with it's crisp white cover and gate fold opens to reveal the lyrics... I know that it's gonna get dinged up and handled, but that's what it's for.... more to come.

A year ago, I saw Alejandro Escovedo speak at the Bandwidth Conference. Embarrassingly, I was not particularly familiar with his work, but the stories he told and songs he played had me very interested. Its fitting now that a year later, I am listening to his most recent release, Real Animal while anticipating this year's conference. Escovedo is a student of many styles, having played in punk band the Nuns, as well as the more alt country Rank and File. These differ... MORE

Alejandro Escovedo may finally be getting his due on his new album Real Animal. He is touring this Summer with Dave Matthews, he recently shared the stage in Houston with "The Boss" (see video below) and he has a Letterman appearance scheduled for early August. Considering he has been one of the most respected musicians among his peers, he has been in influential bands like Rank & File and True Believers, No Depression named him artist of the decade for the 90's and let's...
