Deathjoy posted a song by Alejandro Escovedo, and I have been meaning to do the same after catching him on Austin City Limits recently. He did this on the show and it just has such a wonderful haunting quality....

I heard this on my pandora station and have been trying to track down the artist and works since. I then spotted him on Austin city limits and I'm in love. Now if only I could find a place to buy his music, no one seems to have it!

Alejandro is part of the San Franciscan Escovedo musical dynasty. His uncle Coke has been part of Santana, Sheila E played with Prince. Unlike those two, he first put his funky roots into local punk band The Nuns. Then he moved to Texas and joined Chip and Tony Kinsman in Rank and File, an early ‘cowboy-punk’ band. Finally he started playing under his own name. For the full story, go here. There’s an eye-opening and beautiful YouTube video from earlier this year... MORE

Man, oh, man what a gig in Montclair. We weren't able to show up until about midway through the opener, Diana Jones. There were
2 chairs left, kind of wedged into the corner of the balcony. I'm pretty bad at estimating crowd sizes, but the sold-out crowd looked to be between 200-300 to me. Susan Voelz gets some glorious noise from her violin. David Pulkingham is one heckuva player. The three instruments just sounded fantastic. And the voice. Alejandro's wonderful, expre... MORE

So, all my music finally got sent to MOG , and it's interesting to see my top music by quantity. I have a lot of Sufjan Stevens, thanks mostly to eMusic, but I don't really listen to him a lot. I do listen to a lot of Willie Nelson. I think the first concert I was ever at was a Willie Nelson concert. Alejandro Escovedo is my all time favorite, and I'm sure always will be. If anyone ever has a chance to see him live, they should. Tori Amos and DMB are throwbacks to my... MORE

I went to see Alejandro Escovedo last week, an amazing artist whose Boxing Mirror was one of my favorite albums last year. The Boxing Mirror is all about Escovedo's year from hell, the year his father died and he himself almost passed away, too, after collapsing at a performance of In His Hands from complications of hepatitus C. One of the very cool things about The Boxing Mirror is its use of strings, so it was doubly interesting to see Escovedo backed by his "string quart... MORE

While panning for gold over on emusic the other night, I happened up one of Mr. Escovedo's albums, _A Man Under the Influence_ (released in 2001). I'd never heard of him before, but his sound definitely made me sit up and take notice. Some of the songs are slower, acoustic ballads (oftentimes backed by strings), most of them dealing with the damage of love. Others are gutsy rockers, fusing acoustic and electric guitars. Both of them feature Escovedo's strong vocals (perhap... MORE

This just handed to me. In a few mere hours, we get to see Alejandro Escovedo play at one of my favorite local haunts. This is the man who Nick & I once saw in Austin and a few hours later, we got engaged. And married 6 months later. I am a sap. A big, big sap.... MORE

I've been working in this office for over 4 months now and found out this morning that there is a CD Cellar almost touching my office building, needless to say I am totally ecstatic. On my lunch break I managed to pick up Janis Joplin- I Got Dem Ol' Kosmic Blues Again Mama! (for the second time, some fortunate soul has my first copy, and may I telk you around here at least that album is nearly impossible to find) and off of a recommendation from a fellow Mogger I can't quite ... Alejandro Escovedo played The Aladdin Theater in Portland last Friday - having seen Alejandro a number of times and since the Aladdin is a sit down theater type of venue I was expecting the acoustic string quartet version of his show. I was completely wrong - he blew the roof off of the place and had people dancing in the aisles.
The 'orchestra' was rock band plus cello (which if you've been reading you know I like) plus apple laptop. His most recent CD (The Boxing Mirror)... MORE

I'll keep this short because it's almost 1 am and I have to be at work in a few hours (yes, on a Sunday). Alejandro Escovedo was simply amazing Friday night, though I would expect nothing less from him. I’ve seen him maybe seven times now and I’ve only seen one bad show. (But, wow, that show was bad.) The new guitarist (Jon Dee Graham’s replacement) is an incredible player. Jon Dee who? The new celloist is stunning — and it’s great fun to watch him and Alejand... MORE

Listening to Alejandro Escovedo's records does nothing to prepare you for the experience of his live shows. Someone should have told a few of the folks who showed up last night at the Triad Stage for Alejandro's show. I think they were expecting a nice, charming evening with a singer/songwriter. What they got instead was an onslaught of glorious noise that shook the foundations of the soul. On his records, Alejandro's music is a lush, beautiful creation, highlighted by s... MORE
