AMG Review of Blues & Boogie Woogie King: 1936-1947

All Music GuideThis fine import brings together some of Albert Ammons' best work. Cut during his prime years, the 20 tracks include two of the oogie-woogie master's classic piano solos, "Boogie Woogie Stomp" and the nicely gauged lues "Chicago in Mind." The band material is not quite as captivating, but still delivers enough in the way of quality to keep things on the right track. In addition to his regular band, the Rhythm Kings, Ammons gets sympathetic support from tenor saxophonist Don Byas, trumpeter Hot Lips Page, trombonist Vic Dickenson, and his son and future tenor great, Gene Ammons. Big Joe Turner is also on hand to add a little Kansas City fire. A perfect entrée for Ammons newcomers.
