I dig this new Aimee Mann song, "Thirty One Today," a lot. It's off her upcoming album, @# x%x ! Smilers, which will be out June 1.

The 'girl' has always known when to leave a party... Have decided to cease posting, but wanted to take a moment to say farewell to all the wonderful moggers I've come to know these past months; MOG has been immensely satisfying due largely to the eclectic community inhabiting the site. Thanks so much for the fabulous music, comments, and insightful exchanges. Wishing all a lovely holiday season and bright blessings for the approaching new year. Cheers!... MORE

keep art alive; art by kris lewis (from my work-in-progress something) the first time i went to the beach i screamed, and not in an excited to be home sort of way, but more in the blood-curdling psycho killer has come to take my life sort of way, at least that is how my mother always told it. she said that in the car ride there we made up songs about our destination, rhyming silly things that a four year old tends to cling to, with exaggerated pronunciations and fam... i walk into starbucks and this song is playing. not that i have a problem with amiee man, quite the opposite - in fact, i fell in love with her more when i found out she was married to "macy day parade" michael penn. but it was just confusing. i worked at starbucks for almost a year. i've heard everything off the starbucks hear music cds at least 50 times. and starbucks only plays music they sell. but then here was amiee mann doing a 5+year old song with no ties to sbux... oh, baby, i wonder
if when you are older
someday
you’ll wake up
and say, ’my god, i should have told her -
what would it take? when i saw aimee play, while i was visiting chicago on valentine's day, this was one of the songs she played. i was thrilled as this is from one of my most favorite albums of hers, and not one that gets much notice. i'm not sure if i have written about my deep love for aimee mann, and her lyrical storytelling. if i were ever to wr... If you haven't seen this movie, see it.
Excellent performance by Tom Cruise, Philip Seymor Hoffman, Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, Melora Walters, and John C. Reilly. The whole plot(s) circle around the character played by Jason Robards. Great movie.
The sound track by Aimee Mann really pulls it all together. Kinda like that rug in The Dude's apartment. Here is a sample for ya.

Aimee Mann and "bass player" are probably not synonymous but there it is, photographic evidence AND a wikipedia entry! Aimee Mann is in fact a bass player! She's more known as a songwriter and arranger of intelligent pop music, and to some as no more than the singer from 'Til Tuesday...her music is almost always in the personal/"confessional" vein - writing about relationships, addiction and more in a very accessible, universal way. Here are a few tracks to get you ... MORE

In 1985, I remember seeing "Voices Carry" by Til' Tuesday on MTV . Yea...I graduated in 1987 (I will be attending my 20th year high school reunion, but I am loving music more than I have ever in the past. The subtleties, the nuances, the smaller hooks in the background...all of it). Go ahead...make something of it, wiseguy.
To be honest...I usually don't listen to female singers. They are not often found in my playlist, relegated to an off night of listening. I am ... MORE

...so just give up. Give up? Me? Well, if Aimee Mann says so... I spent last night at the hospice with my grandmother. I left there around noon, drove the 70-minute trek back to my place before heading to work only to open my door to puddles of water covering my stereo equipment and seeping into a closet where I keep a cardboard box full of my articles. Apparently, a pipe burst above my apartment between 2:30 p.m. yesterday and 1 p.m. today. Of course, the only evidence ... MORE

I have a hard time with the holidays because my childhood sucked. I won't bore you with the details, because it's an old story and you can figure it out yourself: bad marriages, alcoholism, dysfunction, abuse, trauma, poverty, and a partridge in a pear tree. I'm better now and my Christmases are usually beyond great; in fact, they eclipse the past so that the past should be mostly ashes. But it's not. Because Christmas is full of nostalgia. This time of year it's natural to r... MORE
