AMG Review of Acker Bilk and His Paramount Jazz Band
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideAlthough best known for his pop hit "Stranger on the Shore," Acker Bilk was always a fine Dixieland-oriented clarinetist. This GNP/Crescendo album features Bilk's 1971 band (except for two cuts from 1975), which had such fine British soloists as trumpeter Rod Mason, trombonist John Mortimer and pianist Barney Bates. Highlights of this set include "South Rampart Street Parade," "Honeysuckle Rose," "Wolverine Blues" and "Rose of the Rio Grande," plus three standards with good-time vocals by Bilk.
