The 13th Floor Elevator's best-known cut was "You're Gonna Miss Me"+ which was also the tune played during the opening of the film Hi Fidelity which was based on Nick Hornby's book...I found this old footage of them performing the tune on American Bandstand in YouTube...

Recently I’ve discovered that I can watch some of the movies from the Netflix catalog on their website. Because of this I’ve seen stuff that I wouldn’t normally rent, like the Roky Erickson documentary “You’re Gonna Miss Me.” The film is a sad portrait of the former singer/songwriter of the 13th Floor Elevators and it details his long battle with drugs, the law, and insanity. The film doesn’t end triumphantly, with Roky playing music on stage again or not needing caretake... MORE

After a week of running around, I've been catching up on the sitting down stuff that I got yelled at for trying to do back then (which was understandable, considering the circumstances)...I've found myself listening to the 13th Floor Elevators a lot today and, if you're into 60s-era guitar rock (with a little jug-band action thrown in as a garnish) then you'd be all over The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators...I'd mentioned them before but failed to write up ... the elevators are from Austin, TX... mid 60's. they have a bunch of great under-appreciate songs... however, recently some computer company used their song, "You're Gonna Miss me" in a tv ad.

Hey, a blast from before my time.. "You're Gonna Miss Me" by 13th Floor Elevators.. A band that has become a regular in my record rotation over the past year or so. I am a brand new MOG person, 'guy' or whatever.. So I thought what better way to start off by posting a great phsycadellic rock song.. I discovered this awesome album buy a 60's psychedelic band called The 13th Floor Elevators. The album is called "Easter Everywhere". There is something magical going on on this album. These dudes have tapped into that acid plane to make some bluesy, funky, trippy, fuzzy, punky, music. At times the lead singers voice is so melodically in touch with the music that it sounds evil the way everything comes together. I am so glad I found this album.

Psychedelia from Austin, Texas, featuring the legendary Roky Erickson, 13th Floor Elevators are the best example of lo-fi garage-psych that I know of. Their first album, "Psychedelic Sounds of" seems to get all the attention, but "Easter Everywhere" is, to me, a more cohesive psych album. In their time, the band performed on San Francisco bills with the likes of Jefferson Airplane, the Byrds, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Includes a cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now... MORE

I'm still working my way through Paul Drummond's "Eye Mind: The Saga of Roky Erikson and The 13th Floor Elevators, The Pioneers of the Psychedelic Sound" and am delighted to learn how much more Austin. Texas had to do with the psychedelic revolution than I ever knew.
