WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Sam Phillips - - not the one who discovered Elvis

Posted over 3 years ago
So I wore this album out one winter in Chicago, while building a guitar in my friend's cabinet shop. Talk about freezing. Wet-sanding a finish when you can't feel your fingers. Not so fun. But I got it done, and still play it once in a while. The point is: she's good. She doesn't have a huge vocal range, and her whole thing is sort of obscure. I think her albums were good in direct relation to her marriage to her then-producer, T Bone Burnett. In fact, I'm not sure if she's done much since. But I find her smart lyrics and semi-jaded realism extremely compelling. Sultry vulnerability gets me every time. And she has one of those voices that sounds cool when it's multi-tracked.Any other fans?

  1. d0gstar says yep, I am. The only one I have is Fan Dance, which I love. I always thought that, before they separated, she and T-Bone Burnett were maybe the second coolest couple in rock, right behind Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson. Josh Homme and Brody Dalle are pretty cool too, and there are others I'm sure, but the combination of T-Bone and Sam always intrigued me.

  3. mullytron says Well, I just have the one record. It's one of those takes-you-back-to-the-exact-moment records for me, so when it comes on I can smell the lacquer and the sawdust, my hands go numb, etc. I guess it's singer/songwriter? Modern folky pop with edge? I guess I'm not the best source of info on Ms. Phillips after all.

  4. RGM says Cool, I'll check online for her. Where I just moved to there is nothing, but classic rock and folk gigs. I'll have to invest in an uprite when I and cash premits. Still love to get a 5-er' B.O. Warwick. Can't see myself taking a 2-3k bass out of the house. I dig the thumbs, but you can get the passive Corrvettes new well under a grand, and still have money to chuck in a Bassline 3 band. Most of the standard Warwick B.O. are 2 bands and well over a grand. Forget the Rockbass, there cool, but not the sound of wood...

  5. Watson Smith says Loved Miss Sam for years...and as an added bonus, she performs the incidental music and vocals for my favorite show, GILMORE GIRLS. Every week I get to hear Sam's strumming guitar and vocals! Whee!

  6. Kirk Adams says Yeah! I'm a huge Sam Phillips fan! It was Cruel Inventions that got me hooked and I've bought every CD since. "That's Where The Colors Don't Go" is a total classic track from that CD. Gets me everytime. Van Dyke Parks did the string arrangement I believe. Matter of fact I've got to put it on my MOG as a must hear. Personally, I think she's gotten better and better. And the song from the Gilmore Girls (which I've never seen) called "Reflecting Light" is gorgeous. Too cool. Later, Kirk

  7. AustinNative says I keep going back to listen to the only Sam Phillip's cd I own, Martinis and Bikinis, and I'm always knocked out. Takes the late sixties Beatles sound and extends it, warps it, makes it her own (and T-Bone's). I had to listen to it six or seven times before it hit me, so be patient and rewarded.
