WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Super chill, semi-morose guilty pleasure - - Talk Talk/Laughing Stock

Posted over 3 years ago
Ever have one of those days where you're bummed and need the right music to fit? Not romantically bummed, because everybody knows the best musical cure for the romantic bum-out is Sade. More like, bummed out in the soul, over it, not feeling it, feeling like your guts are all hanging out and your skin is missing.Talk Talk is a lot of things, but I never thought they might be emotionally soothing. But if you're on that page, get Laughing Stock, their last album. It's the record that sunk their deal, but man, is it gorgeous. Mark Hollis mumbles, the songs are kind of improv-ed and formless, but the upright bass is your friend, the harmonica/harmonium combo is a psychic pillow for your tired brain, the organ is a cool breeze, and the Telecaster feedback is like a pure nerve vibration, showing you what's real and what is merely lies.

  2. Kent Lambert says ahhh, i'm so glad you reminded me to listen to this album again! i've been in a similar gorily bummed state for a few days and nothing i've listened to has quite fit. but i just put laughing stock on and can already feel the relief. i can't wait for "new grass", i think it might be one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. you made my night mully!

  4. Barney Hoskyns says Love LAUGHING STOCK, though SPIRIT OF EDEN was of course the bigger shock/greater revelation. I still remember having to review that extraordinary mini-album and expecting more brylcreemed anguish from the TT I'd seen in Smash Hits... only to be laid out cold by something so completely displaced and out of (80s) time I thought I was dreaming...
