Andy Bey - - jazz vocal MACHINE

Posted over 3 years ago
Anyone here like jazz vocals? A lot of jazz vocals are a waste of time, same old songs, some dude or some chick really "goin' for it," whatever. But Andy Bey is amazing, flat out gorgeous. He has sung with Horace Silver, Stanley Clarke, McCoy Tyner, etc etc. The way he wraps his voice around syllables is intense. That kind of intense that's intense even when it's quiet. I only know this one album, and the band is smoking, Ron Carter, Victor Lewis, and Mino Cinelu. He's an elder statesman for sure, if you have any interest at all, check him out. It's everything good about jazz singing without all the lameness.

Stereotypes like that exist for a reason. However, there are singers out there that can really make a song their own. As much as you might not like Diana Krall or Norah Jones, both of them approach songs in their own style, while many others basically just change a note or two of Frank Sinatra's interpretation and think they have something new. Anyway, thanks for the tip!

  2. mullytron says Are you kidding me? Norah Jones and Diana Krall are two of the greatest singers, ever, period. As in, singing a song and delivering the goods and putting it over, as we used to say. Never mind that Diana Krall can play rings around most pianists. And if you can't hear Don't Know Why, I'm sorry, you don't like pop music or singing or good playing. It totally is more about character, and having it, than being some kind of genius, and not many do.

  3. ivylander says Look for a CD called "Andy Bey and the Bey Sisters," from the early '60s (I think). A little Vegas in places, and I'm not so sold on the uptempo stuff, but breathtaking covers of "A Taste Of Honey," "Willow Weep For Me" and (believe it or not) "Tammy."
