Shuggie Otis - - Inspiration Information

Posted over 5 years ago
Is it tiresome to say, yet again, what a great record this is? We all owe David Byrne a debt for re-releasing this 70s gem. Like a soundtrack to a movie that was so cool it could never get made. Which is fine, because now you get to make it up for yourself.Cool songs, real strings and woodwinds, weird stony Optigan beats, funky-a$$ wah, groovy bridges. Sheesh, whaddaya want?

  3. Dave says Oh hell yes, I wondered if I was all alone. It's one of my Desert Island Discs. Weird that he just did this one and then disappeared. There was a rumor he was down in Fallbrook, not far from where I live.

  4. mullytron says He got back in the limelight for a minute, after the re-release. He did a show in SF, either the Fillmore or the GAMH, I forget, and I heard he was a major basket case back stage. Fighting with his girlfriend, being on drugs, etc. It's too bad, I guess, but that record rules.

  9. Dave says I just did some digging and found that four tracks on the reissued CD actually belong to Shuggie's earlier 1971 album "Freedom Flight"... and there's one more earlier album called "Here Comes Shuggie Otis". Those two are available as a two-fer from Amazon... and it's in my cart.
