WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Record collector's dream or nightmare

Posted over 3 years ago
I love Boris. I love Important Records. A pairing of the two should be a no brainer equaling a great product and experience for the record collecting public right? Holy shit. This latest debacle in limited edition record releasing has many forum cruisers cracking under the strain of trying to keep up:"Given all that has been going on recently with the Boris -Veins release, Whitebox tour edition, 5 different colours of Black One etc.....I know of some people who were so keen in supporting SUNN O))) and Boris but have been so cynical about the way limited editions of almost every release are being churned out that they do feel burnt out...."Limited Edition Fatigue".......its not a new thing but the sheer volume of limited editions seems to have eroded the joy of obtaining a new release...I am guilty myself of being caught in the frenzy......will they stop and give us space to breathe? I doubt it but it would not surprise me if there is a backlash against this whole "sweatshop" ethic of releasing records.... "Some are incredulous:"$21 for a 1 sided 12" ??? so its got half the music of an LP and is nearly 2 times the price for the sole reason of some pretty artwork?? wellll la de da"The shocked purchaser when it was discovered they released two versions under the same title without really telling anyone:"My copy of Vein doesn't sound at ALL like the one somebody posted here which was ripped to 12 mp3 tracks. My copy has no vocals, less drums and way more noise! Anybody know what's going on?"The inevitable flame threads:"so ive waited about a year this record to come out, and paid $42 just to have to send the peice of crap back to the states, because ive been sent a mispressing. now i will never hear the actual lp because the fucking things sold out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this has really pissed me off, i will NEVER be ordering from important again."Dont blame it on important, they are good people. Boris wanted this stupid crap limited to such an absurd amount. And only boris would want two different versions of something that is far too limited to begin with."important put the record out didnt they, yep thought so. they took my money didnt they , yep!! you send me $42 and i'll send you an unlistenable peice of wax............youd love it i bet!!!!!!!"And you may be wondering if this has anything to do with music rather than a bizarre fetishistic desire to own an ultra-rare piece of vinly from an obscure Japanese metal/noise band. I'm going with the latter. And how is the music you say? Well I've heard both versions and I have to admit that the 12 track version is some of the best stuff Boris has released. The 2 track noise version is really good too. The vinyl itself, well I've only seen pictures but it is a gorgeous design. Have I tried to find one? You bet your fucking ass! My chances are slim, I'll keep crawling the net hoping to run across a distributor that has a copy but as the days from the release date grow I'm not sure how much longer I can participate in what one poster called "...a $30 OOP limited pressing practical joke."**all the posts were taken from the Southern Lord forums.

  1. Tuff Today, Tuff Tomorrow says whoa! scandalous, i just dont understand why the company would release different versions of the same album, that could only result in confusion...

  2. wassonii says that whole limited fix can get the best of you. Boris seems to have a big enough base of otaku seekers though, so as long as there is demand... Important records has some great offerings, too, so thanks for adding their link to the post. Just started finding them a coupla months ago through Andrew Liles. merci!
