WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

I take my coffee black, like my metal.

Scary music rules. I've been getting more and more into this stuff and it seems like there's more of it out there. Maybe it's the proximity to Halloween? Maybe the scary, fear-induced world of post-9/11 America (as run by W)? Whatever it is I say "keep it comin!" ??Subliminal Genocide?? is a welcome addition to my ever-increasing horror filled catalogue. It'll sit well alongside Sunn 0)), the new Wolf Eyes, Leviathan and Wolves in the Throne Room. Like Leviathan, Xasthur is lacking that traditional riff based metal and is more akin to distortion heavy shoegazer stuff. A wall of overdriven guitar laced with screams, dark synths and the overwhelming feeling of being dragged into a pitchblack pit will confront the listener on most tracks. Sounds fun huh?! There's a few slow-tempo songs that meander through a tangle of notes intent on supplying an ample feeling of dread. Steer clear if you're more of a stoner doom fan but I think those who appreciate all-encompassing super-effected guitar driven music where the emphasis is on tone and feeling rather than songcraft will love it.

  1. BarrieSutcliffe says Glad you posted about this one... this is a fantastic album. Definitely pushes the boundaries of "black metal" into scary new depths. Like the soundtrack of being dropped down a bottomless pit, the sides of which are covered in screaming, tortured souls. This is one of the few cases where truly bared emotion really, really works. There's enough formal fuckery going on here to keep things interesting, but without getting in the way of the direct message. Malefic is amazing.
