Remember them... Urge Overkill

Posted 11 months ago

If any band seemed to have a 'destined never to make it' curse it was Urge Overkill. I think a combination of acting like rock gods before having a weighty enough base of great songs and the inevidible mischief that goes along with the hedonistic sex'n'drugs side of things took their toll on the band before they could get as huge enough to justify their behaviour. Plus they were introduced to a wider market with a song that really wasn't their staple fodder in 'Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon' which was surely only ever going to lead to dissapointment at their over-blown, bulging rock that would follow But having dug out their albums today for a first time in a long while and am quite taken with them. If they are only judged on thieir music and not all the other indie politics and label expectations that seemed to befall them, they'd leave a pretty great legacy. They seem to have been recording a new album at Axl Rose pace, having first heard of it when they having caught them live more than two years ago. Even so, I was quite relieved to see thay they are still a completely over-the-top live act - wearing purple velvet suits and silky lime-green shirts and producing more impressive poses than a season of Next Top Model. Hopefully the new album does eventually see the light of day and the band get some chance of the dues their music warrants. This single 'The Break' was supposed to be their big bounding step through the door that 'Girl.. slightly opened for them, but instead meekly faded into the bottom reaches of the charts and dissapeared soon after, barely troubled any radio playlists and began the band's descent into obscurity. Damn shame cause its a cracking song.
