The story behind the Mermaid Avenue album is that Woody Guthrie's daughter went to Billy Bragg and to Wilco and asked them to add melodies to some lyrics that Woody had left. The result was two fabulous albums. Before I heard the records I was unfamiliar with Billy Bragg's music. I have since listened to a couple of his older records but the hideous 80's production does my head in. Nonetheless, Billy is a great singer and songwriter and it's worth checking him out. I have listened to Wilco too but find them dull.

I am starting to gain an appreciation for Billy and this helps. His politics really turn me off (as do almost all political songs) but when concentrates on other topics I find his music very pleasant.

Have to say the politics turn me on. But that's not a reason to like the music. No, he's just a great songwriter and has a really unique style... Worth getting to know, I agree.

Well, I haven't really got into this MOG thing, I don't understand what it's for but I have had a sudden impulse to chuck this out there. The major labels are done for. My acquaintances within the music biz are up in arms and I feel sorry for people who are worried about work. Still, I am rubbing my hands gleefully with news of the collapse of the CD industry. It's a funny old world.

Welcome to MOG. Not sure if the major labels are done for but it will be interesting to see what happens.

This is James Hetfield of Metallica. If you haven't seen "Some Kind Of Monster" the movie which follows the band recording their album St Anger. The band are also shown undergoing therapy and squabbling alot. This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. "This Is Spinal Tap" suddenly seems almost sombre.

What's so wonderful is the way this band have achieved monumental success yet have failed to transcend the kind of petty squabbling, insecurities and personality conflicts that afflict all the bands I have ever had anything to do with; probably most bands.

Or maybe that's just the way the film makers edited it.

Anyway, stay clean, James!
