Whoa...this sneaked up on me. Nearly flew right past me, in fact. But it was a year ago today I joined MOG and created my first two posts. The time I've spent here has been a true pleasure. Man, does that ever sound lackluster and uninspired - but it's really true. I only wish I had more free time to devote to it; the few kindred spirits who read my posts know that I've not had much of a presence here lately. It's not due to any disenchantment with MOG; it's more the result of being substantially busier with my freelance day job, plus landing a music gig back in June that has me out playing three nights a week. Obviously that's good news for the most part - I'll take as much music in my life as I can get - but it has definitely kept me from posting much here. Maybe I'll make a New Year's resolution to carve out some quality MOG time in 2008.But in celebration of my MOGiversary today, I'm going to harken back to my second post, from 12/17/06, and share with you my absolute favorite Christmas song. One of the chief reasons that I look forward to this season, especially when sometimes it seems like there's not so much to look forward to, is the fact that I get to play this song again. It's 1983's "Christmas Is Coming," by "The Payolas":http://wc08.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:39fpxq85ldfe (sometimes "Payola$"). I always knew they were Canadian, but only today did I learn that Bob Rock and Paul Hyde actually formed the band in Victoria, British Columbia - home of the illustrious (though quiet) "mezz":http://mog.com/mezz_. I already liked that city, but now I've got yet another reason. So why am I such a sucker for this song? I think that at least partly it takes me back to the long-distance relationship I was in when I first heard it - which continues to this day, happily, minus the long-distance part. On at least two occasions, Christmas brought a much-anticipated reunion for us. Aside from that, the song itself has a loose and genuine quality that drew me in then and still does today. Surprisingly for its '80s vintage, the arrangement features no poppy synths to date it; just a killer two-guitar hook and nice trashy-sounding drums. The stoptime break before the next-to-last chorus always gets me too.h2. Merry Christmas, MOG!(As to availability, I originally bought this gem as a special edition 12" vinyl release....but it's available on a 1995 compilation called The Edge Of Christmas - out of print of course, but available at Amazon and elsewhere. It's worth checking out - includes some cool, off-the-beaten-path selections.)

  1. ivylander says Hair like that and no synths? What, think we were born yesterday? Seriously, good to see the rodent in the upper left hand corner again....

  2. mousetrap says Hey, thanks Ivy, and good to hear from you! Yeah, despite the Flock-Of-Seagulls-refugee look of the dude at right rear, no synths that I can hear in this one - though many of their other tunes certainly included the requisite syn-brass punches and mod-wheel vibrato. Dunno if the tune was actually available for you to play when you first read the post, as MOG seems to be in partial hairball mode today - so if it wasn't, try playing it now. It's worth a listen. And I owe you a MOGmail, dammit...I'm a heel.

  3. ivylander says I'm going to check out the audio when I get home - management frowns upon us unleashing seditious music into the working atmosphere....

  4. mousetrap says Seditious is right, man....I suppose the Payolas should probably get back together just to amend the politically incorrect title phrase and re-dub the chorus as "The Holidays Are Coming...". Anyway, enjoy the tune when you do get the opportunity. Your cup may runneth over, as it appears I may have uploaded the MP3 no fewer than four times in my concern about whether MOG was attaching/embedding it properly. Shame on me. (Can't see a way to edit it and remove the redundant attachments, though - and what's the deal with that stern warning that you can upload only one MP3 file per post? HA - I scoff at your warnings!!! Or wait....I guess I did upload only one file - just four times. Hmmm.)

  5. Augusts1 says Happy happy joy joy! My 1 yr. mogiversary is not far off on Jan. 8th, although I didn't actually post till the end of Jan. since I initially had problems w/Mog O Matic, got frustrated, didn't bother w/it for 3 weeks, then decided to try it again & got it worked out. So maybe I shouldn't celebrate my Mogiversary till the end of Jan. Not sure what is correct though. Any thoughts? Great song, I like it, even though I'm not much of a xmas music fan. I've even heard of these guys but haven't heard a song by them(that I know of). Hope you're having a great Mogiversary!

  6. darmuzz says Hadn't heard this song before. What kind of Canadian am I? Oh yeah, an East Coast one! Happy Mogiversary! August, we should celebrate together, I am January 18!

  7. mousetrap says Ahem....please everyone, excuse my incoherent ramblings above, about uploading the MP3 file four times. Clearly, the little number below the red Play button reflects the number of times the file has been played. A bit weak in the user interface department, I would argue, but even so it's a bit embarrassing that I jumped to such a silly conclusion. Must be my unbridled glee on this landmark MOGiversary day. And Augusts1, thanks for your comment. Despite having observed you slamming good ol' PDX in a recent comment somewhere, I'm in a generous mood today and I forgive you. I'm glad you like the Payolas tune. Never heard them before, huh? I have this funny feeling that if you check out "this post":http://mog.com/dachmo/blog_post/96494 and listen to the song it contains, it just may sound familiar to you. Better still, click over to "this post":http://mog.com/mktackabery/blog_post/108121 to watch the sweet video. Anybody need wardrobe/hairstyle/makeup ideas for an '80s-themed party? Heh.

  8. Augusts1 says Ahahahaha. Well I was slamming '70s/80s PDX for a good reason since the radio stations rarely played anything that wasn't top 40. I'm still discovering groups that other most everyone knew at the time. I clicked on the 2nd link to Mktackabery's post & watched the vid & recalled I had seen/heard the vid/song before. I even made a comment on the post as well where I was slamming '70s/80s PDX. DAMN I'm consistent, haha! I may have even commented on the post in the first link. Thanks for the links.

  9. Augusts1 says Darmuzz, celebrate together? Are you planning a trip to N. CA in Jan? haha Cause I certainly have no plans to go to Canada!

  11. Mike the Knife says Congrats on the year of MOGging dangerously. And a good, offbeat call for Xmas tunage. A bunch us have been ruminating over the same Yuletide thing this past week - http://mog.com/Mike_the_Knife/blog_post/130152 - but no one's tapped the Payolas until now...

  12. mezz says and... ummm.... in the spirit of the season and in the interests of world peace.... my previous entry was 90% fiction. the payolas did NOT stage a reunion gig here (or anywhere, to my knowledge) last weekend. bob rock has NOT taken to tonsorial activities of any kind. my brother, on the other hand, has been tending his mousetrap for many years and so has not managed a visit to these frigid climes in quite some time.

  13. dermahrk says I think you've added a lot of quality to the Mog-O-Sphere in the last year. If this song was one of your first posts, I guess I wasn't paying attention. No nostalgic connection here - I've never heard this before - but it sounds great to me!

  15. BecauseYouAreHere says Paul Hyde & the Payola$! Wow... I bought their album "Here's the World for Ya", because I was a Real Genius fan and there never was an official soundtrack released, so I had to find every song from that movie in it's own right. Now I'm gonna have to go looking for more.
