Fleet Foxes - ragged woods
Titus Andronicus - arms agaisnst apathy
Big Mountain - Baby i love your way
I have played these songs quite frequently this week for different purposes.
‘ragged woods’ strikes me because of the ethereal voice of the lead singer. There are many elements present in their style that are blended remarkably well. They are vastly becoming a favorite band of mine.
‘arms against apathy’ is an angry rant against what; I have no idea. The music is a slow pump that plateaus, carrying vocals that at times are reminiscent of Oberst from the desaparecidos era, but not entirely. Towards the end, a melody line is added that in its simplicity adds new life to the last verse by changing the flavor. It has treated me well on my early morning drives to work.
Music has a way of trapping a memory and throwing you in reverie. ‘baby, I love your way’ throws me back to a memory of when a buddy and I were hitchhiking. We were picked up by a truck driver, a tiny old man with a huge amish like beard, with two wooded legs and multiple bullet wounds. I didn’t believe him until he showed us the scars and tapped on both of his legs. He went off on many a rants, but one that I remember is of him transporting meat in a refrigerated truck. Gun violence and spending a day or two in the refrigerated portion were involved along with a farmer on a tractor. Any way he said that this song kept him alive because it was his girl’s favorite song. Back to my excursion, when we were riding with him he had this song on repeat for the entire ride. Annoyed the hell out of me then, but now when I come across it I smile.

good week for music: my top three
Langhorne Slim - 'Restless'
The appleseed Cast - 'hello dearest love'
Laura Marling - 'The Captain and Hourglass'
My buddy told me about langhorne. 'restless' just keeps pushing forward.
'hello dearest love' this is a couple years old, but it is a great opener from a decent album.
I think i am in love with laura marling's voice

hey nice picking on this langhorne tune. thanks for the listen!
he's a recent love of mine but i've fallen hard and fast. thanx for posting :)
my top three of the week are new academics - would smoke kate nash - foundation Fieldy's Dreams - rock n roll gangster
I posted 'would smoke.' i can't get this song out of my head. it is catchy and fun. my south african buddy has been sending me some tracks and this was a gem from his collection. 'foundation' represents my month of female influence. it is not my normal taste, yet there are a dozen songs on last months playlist that are female led. 'rock n roll gangster' is so ridiculous there is no way it can be bad.

i'm diggin nash as well and shes not my typical styz either
there is definitely a better selection of female-fronted music this year. i usually don't like any words with my music unless it's hip hop or something crazy like bjork. but this year, i've been appreciating nash, duffy, adele, estelle, erykah and more! it's crazy, i never listen to this much soul. this is the first I heard from the New Academics album. thanks for the listen!
