If you go through my old posts, you will find that many of the images I posted have been replaced with generic alien heads. Why should I bother posting on a site that won't keep the images? I wrote a note to the mog.com "support" email address but have not gotten a response in my email or my mog messages.

My blog is morst.blogspot.com if anyone wants to know what's up with me.

thanks for playing.

bye.

ps if a server serves files, what do you call something that loses files?

pps how long before I'm not "blazing" now that I have removed all the content from my mog except my old posts?

How I climbed aboard the Dixie Wagon

Blue Dixie is a band of guys who met in the college town of Columbia, Missouri and first started playing together 19 years ago this month. They have not played regularly since 1994, although they have reunited several times since then for gigs and private parties. I first heard them in 1989, at a 20th anniversary celebration of Woodstock that took place in downtown St Louis. They played (and still play) a mixture of original music, Grateful Dead, and other rockin' cover tunes. I REALLY dug their set, and did not realize during the show that a high-school friend of mine was one of the guitarists, but found out right afterwards.

My step-dad at the time was a classical guitar player, and he had purchased one of the very first DAT machines that came to the USA from Japan.

Once I realized that my friend Brad was in the band, I asked my step-dad if I could use his DAT deck to record them, and he said "sure." So a few weeks later, I found out that they were playing a regular tuesday night gig at Cicero's (in it's old location on the south side of Delmar Blvd, in what has now been converted into the Blueberry Hill Duck Room, where I saw Cracker play just a few months ago!). At the Cicero's gig, Brad introduced me to the rest of the band, and I asked if I could record them some time. They were all VERY enthusiastic about it, and I made a few tapes of them that fall.

Come spring of 1990, they were ready to try to take it bigtime, and planned to move to Charlottesville, Virginia, to take advantage of the large number of college and universities. They invited me to move out there with them and mix sound for them, despite the fact that I had never mixed live sound before. We all knew I had an interest in making live recordings, so mixing their sets would be a great way to facilitate that.

Brad taught me the basics- at my first shows, he would help me through the soundchecks, and get me familiar with the mixing consoles ("desks" they are called in Britain!) and I learned a LOT from engineers at clubs and frat gigs out east. I also was able to attend a lot more Grateful Dead shows there than if I had still been living in St Louis. (The GD did not play in StL from 1982 until 1994, though they booked shows at the Fabulous Fox in 1987 that had to be cancelled due to Garcia's collapse just a few days before the scheduled dates) Anyhow, thanks to Brad from Blue Dixie, and Adam Roehlke, the soundman at Columbia's Blue Note, I got to meet GD soundman Dan Healy, and was able to pick his brain a little. Well, a little Dan Healy wisdom can go a long way! I learned how to make soundboard-audience mix recordings and strove to make my Blue Dixie tapes sound as good as possible.

Now, years later, archive.org exists, and we got Blue Dixie up there, so all that air that the band moved can be replicated by using the digital Dixie recordings to move today's air in a similar way!

unclassifiable, except. . .

As I was getting my wristband for the Howe Gelb show at The Annex last Friday evening, someone was asking Darwin the doorman what kind of music was at the club that night. Darwin said he couldn't really describe it, I lamely offered "California Ambient Country Rock" and just then Howe happened to walk by, and when asked, he just said it didn't really fit into any category.

Eleni Mandell was already on stage by the time I got there, and I found that the audience numbered not more than about 30 in attendance. Everyone was in rapt attention mode, listening to Eleni singing and playing Howe's acoustic guitar.

Well, Howe got his show started, played a couple solo acoustic guitar tunes, then brought Thoger Lund out to play electric bass.

The sound system had some gritty background hiss, and Howe commented on it a few times, early in the show, but after a few songs, it was like the clicks and pops on vinyl- you just didn't focus on it anymore.

Howe plays a very unique style of processed acoustic guitar (he uses a delay pedal, and a Digitech Space Station), and sings some of his vocals through a microphone with virtually no bass response. After the show, I asked Paul, the house sound tech what kind of mic it was but I can't remember what he said, but I know I had never heard of it. it was a stubby little mic with a silver-colored windscreen, and I thought maybe it was an old AKG, but it was not. Paul also remarked that he liked Howe's main mic too- that it sounded good and was easy to mix. I had never heard of that one either. I think they might be some Danish brands. Just a guess there.

Anyway, the music was fairly indescribable, but luckily Howe was very cool about allowing me to record the set, so I ran a DAT and have posted my recording on archive.org for all to hear and enjoy. A kind person named Jörg posted his best guess at the setlist, so I'm going with that, since I was not familiar with any of his original material. I must thank my friend Jack, the Sonic Curmudgeon, for suggesting I check out Howe and Giant Sand some years back. Jack opens my ears to a lot of good things that I might not otherwise stumble upon. Lke Danny Barnes and his former band, The Bad Livers THANKS JACK!

After the show, I told Howe I agreed that his music was pretty much unclassifiable, but I said that I finally figured out after all that, a category for him: Musicians I don't want to miss when they play nearby!

If you have open ears, check him out when you get the chance!

ps Kiki Schueler wrote a pretty good writeup of the gig in our local alternative weekly, The Isthmus

John Doe with Dead Rock West!

I saw a great gig at the High Noon Saloon on July 16th. . . Dead Rock West supporting and backing John Doe of X fame.

I went down to the venue around 5 during the soundcheck to ask John if I would be allowed to record the show, and he was kind enough to say YES! Dave Carpenter from Dead Rock West said it would be cool if I recorded their set as well.

(This shot was not actually taken during soundcheck proper, but actually shortly after they let the crowd in around 9PM)
I had recorded John at the 2006 Cracker Camper Van Beethoven Campout so I brought him a set of CD's of his performances there- including when he sat in with Camper Van Beethoven on X's White Girl

Dead Rock West played first, and they were really good- I am stoked to see them play a whole show some time.

Dead Rock West and Nick Luca backed up John Doe, and played for about 75 minutes. Awesome set drawing a lot off his A Year In The Wilderness, his most recent Yeproc Records release, as well as a few off the previous one, "Forever Hasn't Happened Yet" and a couple of X songs. The encores were covers by Joni Mitchell and the Stones. Very rockin' show, although John's electric guitar was not working properly midway through the set (not sure why) so he played acoustic a little more than he had planned to.

Setlist:
The Losing Kind
Big Blue House
The Golden State
tech break
Darling Underdog
Mama Don't
A Little More Time
Twin Brother
?"walk around this downtown half a hundred times" (Anyone know the title of this one? Please post it in a comment!)
Fourth Of July
Grain Of Salt
Unforgiven
There's A Hole
Hotel Ghost
White Girl
Highway 5
Lean Out Your Window
The Unhappy Song
The New World - Revolution
encore break
encore intro
A Case Of You
Gimme Shelter

Great show, my favorite highlights were The Losing Kind, Golden State, Mama Don't, Fourth Of July, and The New World > Revolution (yes, the Beatles song!)

Soundboard + Audience mix recordings

Audience recordings are real. They are actual recordings of what happened AND what it sounded like. The potential problem with soundboard (direct line) recordings is that if one instrument or voice is loud on stage, it will not be captured on a simple board feed, and the opposite is true too, that if some sounds are NOT loud on stage, they will be heavy in the mix. In effect, the soundboard tape is the OPPOSITE of the actual sound, unless the band's stage mix is so perfect that ever sound in it can be added in equal parts to the soundboard feed.
The advantage of a "board tape" is that when the band is balanced, you get a recording without much (sometimes ANY) room sound, which sounds much cleaner than a room full of people and reflected sound.
Mixing a board and audience tape can give the best of both worlds, an actual archived memory of what happened (the audience mics) combined with the direct recording of the "opposite of what was loud" - usually vocals and effects come through the strongest, and non-loud sounds like keyboards and small percussion instruments.
I like making audience recordings when I only have one recorder, since I feel like there is a higher chance of getting something worthwhile when I only have one shot at it. If I have two recorders, I will gladly take a board feed on one, and run my mics (which I really think are better than my ears) on the other. If the board mix is even, I can combine them later, or just use the board.
Case in point, I have a SBD tape of Cracker in Madison 2006-08-26, but there is very little of Johnny's guitar on the tape, since he was loud in the room. Who needs that? A Cracker tape with no Lucky 7?!

Now, to get technical (and probably lose 90% of y'all!), the ideal situation comes around very rarely, and that would be a chance to mix my own board tape, where I can take two unused auxiliary outputs from the mixing console, and make my own channel-by-channel mix direct to the recorder. If I am offered access to the board, (like if I'm mixing the show!) I can plug my mics in, assign them to an unused group, but feed them into my recorder along with a hand-picked mix of stage sound sources. Say Johnny is playing loud guitar, and its so loud in the room that it doesn't even need to be in the house sound mix. . . well, I just turn that up extra loud on the tape feed, and the opposite, say vocals (which are not nearly as loud as electric guitar in real life) can be recorded at a relatively lower level since they are bound to be up high in the house mix, as well they should be!

Special thanks to Dan Healy, the sound mixer for Grateful Dead, who taught me how to make a channel-by-channel mix, and add audience mics for the special touch of ambience - he used to make "Ultra Matrix" tapes that were the best of both worlds and he was kind enough to share his method with me.

For example, check out my pal Steve Brothers' recording of Cracker in St Louis a couple weeks ago:
http://www.archive.org/details/Cracker2007-07-05.matrix

Good 'ol Grateful Dead's website has a new look and feel to it. . . and one feature I am loving is the
Tapers section. . . Lots of good live tracks up there direct from the vault. . . use the Firefox browser with the Down Them All extensions and grab a pile of MP3's!

If you don't know about MOTHER HIPS then maybe you should! They have weathered some personnel changes over the years, but they really play great live shows, and the fact that their music is available for free download on Archive.org is a big plus and has allowed me to better appreciate some of their vintage material. Check em out: Mother Hips Website

I am shutting off the Mog-O-Matic. :-(

I don't like how I turned off the Indexing feature on the Mog-O-Matic yesterday and today it's back on. It uses too much of my CPU for me to leave it on all the time, so I've removed it from my system prefs pane. Sorry Moggers, if you wanna know what I've been listening to, you'll have to ask me, or wait until I post about it. Or wait until Mog-O-Matic will just back off and let ME tell IT when it can run.

Weird Mog Dream

I had a very weird dream last night that was kinda fun. It was a Mog dream, although I'm not totally sure what the connection was. Started with me and some friends (nobody I recognize though) attending about one song of a concert by Yes, then with a word of warning like "Hold On" the floor drops out, and plunges like an elevator in free-fall for about 10 stories to street level then about another 6 below that. At the bottom, we realize that we're in close to zero-gravity, to the point where a helium balloon could make us float upwards. There are lots of helium balloons hanging from clustered little outposts in this large indoor area, and friends (and moggers) are floating around. It gets a little crazy when people start pushing off and bouncing around (and throwing basketballs?)

I don't remember much else in particular, but it ended with a presentation by David Hyman, in his office- although I don't think the character actually resembles the real DH. There was a moving stairway up and out but the people who stayed late got an extra tour of the tech side. Something about a tram after that. I guessed that it took place in NYC but was told it was LA.

Really weird, but pretty fun, flying and floating. What the heck? I figure it was a Mog dream so I'd post about it! I woke up to my alarm thinking about it so here it is!

Anyone else had Mog dreams yet? Or am I beta-testing the next version?

Umphrey's 1000th show?

Well, I went to my favorite local venue last night, the historic Barrymore Theatre, to see Umphrey's McGee. They have played there dozens of times, and they do quite well. They sold out both the Thursday and Friday night shows with virtually zero promotion. I used my cameraphone to take a bunch of photos, and have made them into a handy Slideshow that you might enjoy. It runs 2:17, so come back later if you only have a minute!
Although they played a few covers including Jacko's The Girl Is Mine (with a quick verse from Jane Says), Shine On You Crazy Diamond, and an acoustic second encore of That's The Way, I enjoyed their original material more, despite being largely unfamiliar with it. The crowd at the show, on the other hand, was singing along, and waving their hands in the air like crazy- obviously they are much more into the band than I am, but I still had a great time at the gig. I was told that I was the oldest person in attendance to have been carded in order to buy beer! Heh, heh! I am pretty sure that is the first time I've gotten carded since I turned the big four-oh! Anyhow, here's hoping that they can find enough success to keep touring at their present level, and not outgrow the Barrymore anytime soon.

PS here is the setlist from Umphreys.com

I got your sequence hanging! Edie Brickell last week. . .

I didnt get a chance to Mog about the Edie Brickell and New Bohemians show last tuesday so I'll play catch-up now (as opposed to playing catsup!?)

Advance poster from the venue:

I bought my ticket in advance- $15 to see a great singer/songwriter with an ace band in a small club! Woohoo! Take that Bob "$60 arena ticket" Dylan! ;-)

As I entered the club, I was pleasantly surprised to find a stack of glossy 11x17" posters available free for the fans- I suppose that the band sent 'em in advance, but the club used their own so they never posted these and just gave 'em away!

Great set, here's the list as best as I can figure it out from my tape, with a little help from a cuesheet I was given by their guitar tech :-)

pre-intro, intro, Stranger Things, No Dinero, Strings Of Love, Nothin, Beat The Time, banter, Wear You Down, improv -> Love Like We Do, Buffalo Ghost, Long Lost Friend, improv, Kenny intro - World Series scorecheck, Forgiven, Improv, Air Of December, Spanish Style, bus banter, What I Am, Circle, encore break, Wheel, improv?, audience requests, Little Miss S, banter, Mainline Cherry

The cuesheet:

Joe Purdy opened the show:

By the end of his set, he had most of the Bohos sitting in with him:

Here's Edie and Kenny:

Carter Albrecht on the keys:

I spoke to Carter after the show, since I was waiting for my friend John, the house sound and lighting tech for the night, to finish taking down the house sound gear. I told him I hoped it would be less than 16 years before I could see the band again, and Carter told me that they have a two-album contract with one album to go, so there was a good chance they would be coming back around. He said they already have a bunch of songs written for it! I have not seen any press or promo for Stranger Things so I didn't even know it was out!
Carter plays guitar too:

In addition to being a New Bohemian, Brad Houser plays bass for Critters Buggin and jammed with drummer John Vidacovich after-hours during Jazz Fest in New Orleans last spring.

He also plays Baritone Sax, which is a great-sounding instrument! I love the low "honk" tone of a bari.

Edie's enthusiasm is obvious! She really puts a lot into her performance, and I am happy to report that she still sounds and looks great!

My cameraphone doens't have much of a flash, which is just as well, cause I assume it has to bug performers to get flashed in the faces. . . But it made it tough to get a shot of Brandon playing drums, so I caught him during the encore break:

John Bush on percussion:

John has a side project called Foamy which is quite cool. John the house soundman played it for the break between Joe Purdy and the Bohos set. In addition to chatting with Carter, I spoke to John and Kenny Withrow after the show while I was waiting to give engineer-John a ride home, they are all super nice and down-to-earth guys. They were throwing around a nerf-cheese-football and generally enjoying themselves on the second-to-last night of their tour. The final show was the next day in Chicago at Martyr's, which is really tiny. HEY COOL the Martyr's show is up for the download at bt.etree.org and I plan to add my tape too some time soon, hopefully. I also chatted with the band's sound engineer, Jared Herman, who did a great job with the audio. Jared, like the other guys, is also really nice and a total pro.

Is that too many photos, or do you like seeing the fun? If you'd rather just hear some tunes, go to http://www.woyaho.com/music/ and download some MP3's. The interface is a little kooky, but the sound on 'em is great!

Other notes about the show:
I heard a rumor that there was gonna be a special guest - John Popper was in town for a scheduled show that did not actually take place, and he called to say he was coming but didn't show up. I think he played at the Crystal Corner with the Hometown Sweethearts instead.
Many folks in attendence were saddened by the recent untimely passing of their friend Liz Williams, who I never had the pleasure of meeting, but Edie dedicated Buffalo Ghost to her, which was very sweet.

Ok that's all for now. time to hit PUBLISH before Murphy-slaw kicks in! :-)

Bob Dylan on Halloween

Well, I saw Dylan from up close tonight. Got to hear 4 new tunes I had never heard him play, all from Modern Times - Rollin' & Tumblin', Workingman's Blues #2, When the Deal Goes Down, and Thunder On The Mountain. It's kinda cool that Bob is the only vocalist in the band- None of his bandmembers even have a vocal mic on stage! I would love to see him play some guitar again, though. There was a Strat sitting out front for him during the first part of the show, but it was gone for the encore, and he did not pick it up. He has not played guitar since summer 2003, if my memory serves me. That was the year he toured with "The Dead" and played 3 songs with them per night for 7 shows, then at Darien Lake for the final outing on that tour, he added a 4th number, Tangled Up In Blue, and played the acoustic. Dylan's keyboard has more of an organ sound this tour, as opposed to the piano-y sound he has used since fall 2002 (that was the tour when he played all the Zevon songs and phased out the guitar-playing). He has a lap steel guitar on a stand next to his keyboard, but he seems to use it as a music stand more than anything else. :-\
Let's see, what else can I tell you of note here?! Hm, Foo Fighters opened up with an "acoustic" set - I guess if you play sitting down that counts as acoustic, ever since MTV Unplugged, eh? (What a misnomer, they were all plugged in!)

Ok here are some images related to the event:

The advance handbill:

Me in my TODD getup - My buddy Todd was the biggest Dylan fan I knew- almost every show in the USA and Canada for about 7-8 years, and with very few exceptions he was in the front couple rows. He took his family on tour with him- the guy "lived the dream" as my friend John so poignantly said.

The classic "standoff" shot, I wish THE CREEPER had been there but I did what I could to capture the moment, knowing that the security folks would hassle me for using my cameraphone!

Been too long since I Mogged, so I'd like to mention a great band from Charlottesville, VA - INDECISION! After a lengthy hiatus, they regrouped and recorded THE GREAT ROAD at David Lowery's Richmond, Virginia Sound Of Music Studios. David produced the disc, and it's a great-sounding return to form for the fellers. Check out some samples on CDBaby.com. I love the tune Guilty Again, so I'd suggest you start with that one, but it's not one of the ones available on CDBaby, so try Big Bright Light, Little Black Cat, or Sweet Gloria.

Check out CVB's myspace site for some free samples, as well as their full-featured website, and be sure to familiarize yourself with their 2004 album NEW ROMAN TIMES if you don't already have/love it!
I posted the two shows I recorded on Pappy and Harriet's indoor stage in September 2006, at the 2nd annual Cracker-Camper Van Beethoven Campout

Ted has a great voice, and writes some really good songs. I really dig LaPorte Indiana, Death Of Cool, and Billions & Billions from his HELP WANTED disc.
Victor Krummenacher - Kind fellow, GREAT MUSICIAN!

VHK makes some killer music. The legendary bassist from Camper Van Beethoven and <a href="'http://www.magneticmotorworks.com/monks.html\"">Monks Of Doom has some solo albums, and they ROCK©! They're available from Magnetic Motorworks and CDBaby if you wanna check 'em out. Bittersweet is sold out but Nocturne is AWESOME! Buy it from Magmoto if you're into it, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it!
Got Bugs? (Salcido!)

Bugs is a gentleman and a scholar, and a heck of a songwriter. A native of Las Cruces NM, he now resides in Pioneertown CA, and performs frequently at Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace. His thursday night show before the 2nd annual Cracker - Camper Van Beethoven campout was very well-received by the fans and bands alike. A longtime friend of Cracker's Johnny Hickman, he hosted the late night jam known as Porchstock after the Cracker and Camper sets on Friday and Saturday nights. Check out his website at http://bugssalcido.com and download some Free Bugs from The Live Music Archive. His song Everyone Needs Some Love Now was included on a tribute for Linda McCartney.

If you like rock and roll POSTER ART then check out Expressobeans.com

If you dig and/or collect rock and roll posters and flyers you should definitely check out Expressobeans Art Guide. Over 40,000 items listed, most of them are rock-related. It's free to join, and over 7000 members are there so far. Members can list their collections and place items on lists to buy, sell, trade and ISO (seek). Try it, I think you'll like it. ;-)

The site has been in existance since approximately January 2003, and was originally started in order to track prices for ebay and private sales of Phish and Pearl Jam posters, but it's evolved into a lot more, that's for sure.

Great album!

Deep dark lyrics, this one grabbed me immedietely, and has continued to grow on me! I have not really been a Cracker fan for very long, but I really dig their material, their live show, and I should also mention that the bandmembers seem to be really good folks. I am totally looking forward to the 3rd annual Cracker-CVB campout next September!! Woohoo!
