On the way home on the subway last night, I was listening to my iPod on shuffle, and "Suicide's":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_%28band%29 "Frankie Teardrop" came up. It's a creepy, minimalist synth-and-voice "tale of poverty, desperation, and damnation":http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=3530822107858515574. It sounds a little mannered now, but it was probably pretty edgy in its day. In interviews at the time, Bruce Springsteen said that he was listening to Suicide while reading Flannery O'Connor and writing "Nebraska":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebraska_%28album%29, and you can hear the echoes, especially in songs like "Johnny 99" and "State Trooper.""Frankie Teardrop" is a song I'd probably never listen to on purpose, but I was happy to have it appear randomly, though it seemed about five minutes longer than necessary and was becoming a little oppressive. But then the buzzing, droning synthesizer faded, and went immediately into the buzzing keyboard wash that prefaces "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." It was easily the most effective mix tape transition I've ever heard, the more so for being random. Soncially, the fading synthesizer of Suicide blended flawlessly into Cyndi's opening, but the emotional uplift couldn't have been more sudden. No sane person would have programmed such a transition deliberately, but hearing it, I wanted to build a playlist around it.What are some other transitions I could put in this playlist?
