WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Alright... who played this?!

Posted over 2 years ago
Great story from last night. After a local concert, I went to my favorite local bar (it's the oldest one in town). After I'd ordered a PBR, I put some money in the digital jukebox to play "Fire on the Mountain" (the only version available was a live cut from their Stompin' Room Only album) as I made my way back over to the table. There was a pretty sparse crowd last night, so I just stopped by on way home for a quick brew and was chatting with friends.Anyway, as soon as the song starts up, one of the bartenders yells, "Alright, who played this!? Who played the Marshall Tucker Band?"I replied me, "Me, I did."Exasperated, he threw off his baseball cap and walked into the men's bathroom. To my friends, I wondered aloud why he would have such a problem.A few minutes later, while the song was still playing, he walks over and squats down and says, "You, you were the one who played this?"I replied, "Yes, I love the Marshall Tucker Band... and I played this in honor of George McCorkle. You know he died right."He said, "Of course, I know. You hear that flute solo?"I said, "Yeah."He says, "That's my dad! He's one of the original members of the group."He stood up and I said, "What's his name?"He replied, "Jerry Eubanks."At that point, I was totally blown away and asked to shake his hand.He extended his arm to shake my hand and then began telling us that he knew the lyrics to all the songs backwards and forwards and that he has a picture of himself at age 4 backstage at Madison Square Garden (when the band was at its height of popularity and had sold the venue out). His dad's been retired from the band for quite a while (though he wasn't the first member to leave) and he told me of the original six members, only 3 are still alive and one of them, Doug Gray, (the lead singer) is the only original member still with the band.Anyway, just wanted to share that story, as it totally made my night.

  3. debi says Your post made my morning - I grew up listening to MTB (Long Island has a very strong fan base since they first started playing in the 70s). Hubby and I went to see Marshall Tucker Band just last week (partnered with Charlie Daniels Band). Was a sold out house - with the crowd singing along to all the 'oldies'. Doug Gray told the crowd that George was very sick with cancer and dedicated Fire to him. Yesterday I heard on the news that he had passed, and it felt like part of my teens year went along with him In his memory -

  5. Hermes says I didn't get it, why he was exasperated. If his dad retired deliberately, there should be no problem, or? Or does "has been retired" mean, that he was kicked out? Nice story anyway.

  7. moovyphreak says I'd imagine he was exasperated as he told me he heard all their songs hundreds if not thousands of times because of his proximity to the band as a child. Plus, I can't help but wonder if he was a little saddened by McCorkle's death. Not sure how close the original members remained, but I'd imagine they were almost like brothers, so I'd guess that losing George was like losing a uncle, if not a close family member.
