Following my last post up in quick succession (though not as quickly as some of y'all do... got dang!), here's another one of my favorite covers and while I looked it up and a video version has been posted (see the respective artist's page), an mp3 version has not. It's yet another famous song ingrained into the consciousness of American music... and that tune is Sir Mix-a-Lot's 1992 ode to the booty, "Baby Got Back" (which later netted him the 1993 Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance).
And while this is Hip-Hop Thursday, this is about as close as I'll get, as I am still getting "learned" on the art of hip-hop by Rawkkiddo and msquared. In late 2005, as part of his year-long "Thing a Week" initiative, comic songwriter extraordinaire Jonathan Coulton decided to do a pop-rock cover of the famous rap tune mentioned above. I immediately fell in love with his rendition upon hearing it and I especially enjoy how when I start to play it for someone, it always takes them a moment to identify the tune, though the lyrics are immediately obvious, if you're listening carefully.
Thanks to his genius songwriting and some additional exposure with his friend and former Yale classmate, comedian John Hodgman (probably best known as the "PC" from Apple's current advertising campaign), things for Coulton are on the up-and-up.So, here's the track... enjoy!
Oh, and because Rawk has been so generous in the past...
