Duffy falters on 2nd album
-
Artist:
I prefer Duffy as the Dusty Springfield-like ingenue to the Kylie Minogue-ish diva that shows up on this album. Where Rockferry poured emotion and fragilty, this seems to be a "producers" album, intended to push for commercial success on radio in England and in Australia. Not sure it will help her out here in the United States.
I mean some songs are not bad, such as Turn Hurt To Dance, but I wish she had expanded more on her orginial sound and musical direction.
Like Norah Jones, either she or her handlers seem to not know in what direction they want to go.
Still, I gave it 3 stars, because it is still Duffy, with that voice you have to love. I just hope the next album doesn't try to make her into a disposable club mix artist.
She does have a great voice that ought to be on the title track of the next James Bond movie.
UPDATE to this post
After having lived with this album for a while now, I've come to like it. Only the first track, apparently a homage to all the horny blond female teachers preying on 8th grade boys, doesn't "fit" and seems forced to be radio hit. The rest of the album has grown on me and I look forward to any new material from Duffy. She's a keeper.
