Graduating The Sugarcubes

Posted about 5 years ago
A momentous occasion indeed...The Sugarcubes, how can I describe this little big band's music? Well, it's quite strange, yet I'd say not too strange to marginalize you but strange enough that some people might not "get" them. Maybe if I told you that Björk was in it before she became a solo act, maybe it might explain them... Okay? Good, I was getting kind of worried there.I am graduating them to my very populated "favorites bands", yet I'd still like to honor them with a blog post because frankly, I just love them right now. Now they will be a part of the group of the elite in which I will be watching out to see in one of my record store visits to see if I see any albums of them and trying to get my hands on anything Sugarcubes, which might be kind of hard because the group has been defunct for about 15 years ('cept last year, they had a reunion show, which by the way, was awesome), but at least the internet might provide plenty of mp3s. Obsession is what they are graduating to... lolI love music, but sometimes I have a hard time comparing groups or styles to each other because I feel first, I don't know enough about music to be making that kind of remarks. An example of a person like that might be the guy from High Fidelity or Matt Pinfield... People that can tell you right off who influence who, etc... I'm not one of those people frankly, I find myself being too picky to be like that, which frustrates me because I wish I were like that. But then I think it's okay to know what you like and not being able to help it... I consider it a gift because I can usually describe WHY say I like NSync but not Backstreet Boys (couldn't think of a better example at the time)... lol It's a feeling thing I guess, most of the time.Secondly, I have the worse memory and really, even though I have heard a lot of music in my lifetime, I don't think I've heard enough, nor do I think that I've heard the best... Which is why I keep going back in time, musically, and it is when I find bands like the Sugarcubes, that this is justified. I always think that the music scene at the moment is crap (for example, I've sworn off from emo rock, reggeaton, and pop music, which is what most people listen to now). It's pretty lonely sometimes, being in my little musical cocoon ['lil sis tells me my music's sounds old too], but I love it because even though a song was written 20 years ago, if I have recently discovered it, it's new to me! lolThirdly, I don't think I've heard enough outside of the mainstream music too much. I wish I could say I have, but really I haven't. Most of the stuff I listen to might not be popular or seems indie or whatever, but as others music lovers know that I don't stray away too much from a certain line. Totally true, that bothers me sometimes because my aim is to have a refined, varied and knowledgeable music taste... But really at times, I think, it's best not to care about that fact, it just stops you from enjoying the music. So after that long explanation, I'll get right to the Sugarcubes. Things you should know about them that I consider important and that I like about them:- Nationality: Icelandic (Sykurmolarnir is the name of the band in Icelandic)- Languages: Icelandic, English (most of it in english, I believe)- Names: Björk, Einar, Siggi, Þór, Bragi, Magga (Can you pronounce them? Neither can I, but I have fun trying lol)- Yes, Björk sings, but so does Einar... Songs are kind of like conversations between them and/or Einar sounding off and Björk just being cute.- Einar plays a trumpet.... Yes, there's a trumpet in the band, but it's not ska.- I love hearing some of the songs in Icelandic... And then comparing them to the English versions of them.- I love trying to sing in Icelandic, it makes me feel like I'm learning even though I'm really not. (Quite difficult language to learn if you ask me).- Haven't heard all of their songs, but every time I heard some new songs, there's always a new good one.- The sound is amazing, raw, beautiful, a blend that you really can't put your finger on, but you love.- The lyrics are awesome, they have truly unpredictable, ranging from cute to quirky to strange... They have this incredible raw energy, which is what I love the most about this band.Besides all that, the best thing is really to listen to them, they have some great songs. Here is a list of songs you must hear, in my opinion:- Blue Eyed Pop it has this really awesome bass line, guitars also great- Water again awesome bass line, but it's totally different and I love Björk's voice on it, so pretty- Delicious Demon Einar exchange of words and same, Björk's voice, but here the feel is fun... "So delicious!"- Fucking in Rhythm & Sorrow yes, the title... Just that, the chorus and the whole song don't have those words in the lyrics... "Life's both sweet and sour!"- Ammæli/Birthday I prefer the Icelandic Ammæli better, but the English version is up there too. This is one of their most famous songs, and truly is a beautiful song that I love. This one I can actually sing in Icelandic better than any other, but of course, it's not perfect Icelandic lol. Oh and it has got to be one of the best "Björk belch" song that they have- Luftgítar w/Johnny Triumph The one I'm obsessed with right now... Go go!- Vitamin "You convince me, that I am able. You make me strong, you're my vitamin... Wooo!" The most energetic song love song ever- Motorcrash "Riding on my bicycle, I saw a motorcrash, A proper motorcrash..." Trumpets in a song about a crash... lol It's almost as if it wasn't that bad.Recently, I downloaded the Sugarcubes' reunion concert (Live in Laugardalshöll, Reykjavík 2006) and discovered more songs (most notably Blue Eyed Pop) and I think just listening to the whole thing just kicked my fandom up a notch to graduate them... Anyway, hope you enjoyed my post, and I hope you go out there and try listening to them. Who knows, you might like them. :)
