MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:

Have the organizers of Coachella lost their minds? Not only will they allegedly pay Prince a whopping $4.8 million for his performance at the festival, but someone (reportedly an inside source) claims they added him to the bill because the rest of the lineup is a bit lackluster!! Many sources on the net are quoting a report on PerezHilton.com which claims a "source" told him:

"The promoters added him to try and sell more tickets and make up for a less than stellar - in comparison to years past - roster of performers."

Less than stellar? Aphex Twin, Portishead, Kraftwerk, DCFC, My Morning Jacket etc. count as less than stellar? This is the first year I have ever wanted to attend the festival and Prince is not a factor in the slightest. What is this world coming to?

Not to mention, Prince was added to the lineup after most tickets were sold out (single day passes were completely sold out). So what's the point?

I think they just wanted a stand-out headliner like Rage last year... I have to say though, and I love DCFC & MMJ, that the lineup this year was not quite as good as last year's... but I agree with you that Prince did not sway me any further.

i'd say they were less than stellar in the headliner dept (at least compared to last year).....Prince helps that

...actually nice to think the promoters would pay that much for Prince simply to add another dimension for the concert goer being they were already sold out and gonna make their money anyway

i'd play basketball with prince.

I can't picture the scenario where the organizers would publicly say that the headliners were substandard, so I gotta call shenanigans on the entire report.

This will be my 6th. Coachella. I go regardless of the line-up. I discover new music...see old favorites and dance my ass off. I haven't really studied the line-up, and will probably look at it more once the schedule is published next week. But...Prince is great and I am definitely looking forward to seeing him

i guess i just don't understand the music business, coz i don't see why Prince was added so long after tickets were mostly sold out. that, plus i thought the lineup was pretty amazing.

OOOOOOOO! Prince? I'm sorry, he happens to be my favorite any day; if I could afford the trip (let alone tickets) I'm be there.

$4.6 mil seems excessive, though, considering they have other acts to pay for. And the venue. And any other royalties or whatever.

I thought (extortionate?) amounts like that paid to headliners are pretty 'standard' these days?

Prince? Thats a weird addition. Thought he'd be playing Vegas by now.

@RGM... WHA?! Have you SEEN that guy play? He's way too cool for Vegas, man.

Chaos Cowboy : I think he's great, and I really dig his back up band. But I just thought he wasn't as popular any more. I do think he doesn't fit the bill, he seems a little to 80's pop for Coachella in my honest opinion..

If they had almost sold-out, this was vanity, pure and simple - and way too expensive. (And I like Prince.) Then again, it ain't really a hip alternative to mainstream fests when Madonna has appeared on a previous bill.
