Blue Scholars are about to drop their second full length album, BAYANI, with Geologic on the mic and Sabzi kickin out the beats for some good ol' fashioned Pacific Northwest hip hop. That's the coastal Washington state area, for those not from around 'ere. The duo are local favorites, who take the real, everyday situations of living in this day and age, and discuss them. No gangsta rap here, just economic oppression, and spiritual liberation. As the PNW free weekly paper, The Stranger puts it:
what you are most likely to experience as a human being in the world today, are the social and personal situations described on Bayani,The Portland Mercury also offers a grandiose review of the album:
They are everything that Mos Def/the Roots/Common used to be—intelligent, progressive, skillful, and fun. MC Geologic boisterously raps about community, society's ills, and the state of hiphop, all in a classic style somewhere between Aceyalone and Ras Kass. Producer extraordinaire Sabzi also reflects a classic style of traditional boom-bap, creating beats that would make Ali Shaheed Muhammad proud. If that still isn't enough to get you counting down the days until you can peel the plastic wrapper off your brand new copy, peep this review from Seattle Weekly AND go check out the absolutely free track, "Still Got Love", from our fave blog friend, Analog Giant...You can pick up a copy of Bayani when it is available for retail from Blue Scholars' online store, where you can also listen to and pick up their 2005 release, The Long March EP.
