Hello MOG!
-
Artist:
In the spirit of previous posts by Anna, Groon and others, this post jumps on the latest MOG trend of getting to know each other better.
My name is Molli Fire (I'm female), I live in California where I'm a journalism student and aspiring photographer. I snowboard all winter and go to reggae/dancehall festivals all summer. I wrote 2 chapters about reggae and dancehall music which was published in the "Reggae Scrapbook" by Roger Steffens and Peter Simon - both legendary historians of reggae music and culture. The first edition of this book sold out in less than 1 year! I recently received this pic of Lady Saw signing the pages I wrote about her:

I'm currently working on a sequel/follow-up to that book which will cover the different branches of reggae music and it's influences on dancehall, hip hop, electronic music and more.
My days are spent on campus where I'm studying News Reporting, Feature Writing, Photojournalism and Copy Editing. I applied for an editor position on the school's award winning newspaper next semester - the Science and Technology Editor! My nights are spent mogging, doing homework and lounging with my cat.
I dream of being a photojournalist who specializes in difficult environments. I'd love to be a snowboard photographer, so I'll be practicing that intensely this winter. I enjoy any kind of field work, especially interviewing bands, photographing music festivals, sports photography, etc.
I don't belong to any political party or religion. I vote for what I believe in, regardless of party. I'm a deeply spiritual person, but I don't believe in any one religious belief over all the others. I practice buddhism and believe that there is an amazing spirit in all things. Even rocks vibrate with atomic energy which has an effect on all earthly creatures.
I'm addicted to yoga, but I only practice at home. On good days, I do yoga to wake up and again to fall asleep. (I practice at home b/c I can't afford classes...)
Anyone who's read my MOG page knows I love music. Music rules everything around me, I couldn't possibly live without it. My favorite tunes tend to fall under the genres dancehall, electronica, dub, hip hop, metal and punk. I tend to like either really heavy music or really chill music. I almost never like rock or indie rock music. The glaring exceptions are Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Holy Fuck.
I'm madly in love with my cat. We spend most of our time together and I have trouble sleeping if she's not with me. She's the best cat I've ever known - she's polite like a dainty debutante while fiercely protective like a pitbull and german shepard mix. She actually checks the perimeter of our house numerous times a day and is acutely security minded. Her fave toy is a crocheted octopus full of catnip...
Well, that's more about me than you ever asked for! Now that you know more about me, tell us about yourself! Write a post that tells us things about yourself that aren't obvious from your usual MOG posts. Feel free to link to your post in the comments here too!

This has been an interesting read, I enjoyed it a lot. Judging by your posts here on the MOG you've got a strong spirit & soft heart. Let your spirit protect your heart so though it may be bruised occasionally, it will never harden.....and you'll get anywhere you want to go. I pity the fool that gets in the way. LOL
What a wonderful surprise seeing this post. I have loved your posts since i started on MOG almost 2 years now.Its really nice seeing what everyone is into and hope to do the same in the near future. The writing is impressive, thanks
Thanks for this! For a moment I thought we actually had a picture of Molli to look at. Alas....
God, I feel like I've spilled my guts so much on MOG that everybody knows everything already.
Thanks Molli. Music truly does rule!
This was great! Apart from the book thing, all of this was brand new info I think probably to many of us, and it's certainly help paint me a better picture of you, one of our more prolific, and yet mysterious, MOGgers. I'm not Buddhist, but I've been drawn at times to some of the things I've heard over the years, and find it a fascinating glimpse into another worldview, one with answers to questions I didn't even know to ask.
Great getting to know you!
for the record dermahrk (and anyone else) - there's an "actual" pic of me on my MOG profile page. just click to see more photos - i'm the gal in grey. not the clearest image, but i really don't have photos of myself! i'm always the one behind the camera, not in front of it...
thanks everyone for the super sweet comments! i'm not one to spill my guts online, so this was almost a challenge. but everyone here is so cool, i got swept up in the fun of it. (i really enjoyed yr post, dmdm!) Here's a few more posts like this one, by other moggers you know and love:

Cool. This is why I MOG is unique, when I first came to it I really got to KNOW people.
that was a very cool insight, thanks for sharing. Im not going to pollute your mog with my story but you have inspired me and soon I will post one
Lady Saw is the shit!
Hey, Molli, ever try your hand at travel writing?
"I almost never like rock or indie rock music" like taking a bullet....
Best of luck with the follow up!
I actually went to your MOG and looked at your pic (no, I'm not a pervert), 'cause I was curious :)
I know how you feel about your cat awww :)
very cool about the published thing! wish i was published... :)
Nice! You post a lot about UK Grime and Rap, do you ever get over here?
Cool to know you, my grime teacher! I was resisting this biography stuff but after reading this I may succumb.
i've only written one travel story and it was only for school. i'd probably try it more often if i traveled more often.
and yes, i LOVE grime music! i used to visit the UK somewhat regularly, but haven't for years now. i'm dying to get back there as soon as possible tho! i'm thinking maybe late Spring early Summer 2009.... a lot of my next book is based on the Caribbean-British music culture in England from 1980-present. there are many interviews i need to do when i'm over there and many studios i need to visit and photograph.
Hey, great post!
I already knew you were a good egg who was crazy about music, but the vibe is burning a whole lot brighter now.
I might have a bio in me somewhere, if I can find anything I haven't shared already.
i love how passionate you are in everything you're interested in! i hope it's contagious. actually, i do owe my newfound love for dizzee rascal to you!
i'm trying to get back at doing yoga. i can't focus if i am doing it at home so i'm looking for a cheap place to do it and i think "yoga for the people" in berkeley is what i'm going to check out soon.
brittany - i'm dying to check out that yoga for the people place!!! sliding scale and/or FREE yoga classes?! that's SO up my alley! you should def try them out.
another cat person, yay! Molli, it's great to know more about you. that's a really awesome, candidly adorable photo of Lady Saw signing your book, and the best of luck to you on the sequel. it's nice to meet another metal-loving, punk-loving female out here. (i don't listen to enough metal to ever be considered a metalhead but i do passionately love the songs that i love under this genre.) also, i've been trying to enroll in yoga classes but it always fizzles out because they're danged costly, and i think you've inspired me to try it DIY style at home.
"I snowboard all winter and go to reggae/dancehall festivals all summer." i am a wee bit jealous!
Your passion shows through in your writing. All this sharing makes me feel even more connected to everyone here, which is the whole point of this site. Excellent!
Great read, great cat. Well done on the book - Lady Saw looks well pleased with it. I hope the snowboarding photography works out for you. I love a good pic, so be sure to post 'em up here. Thanx!
Moll, keep me posted on that England trip to conduct your interviews. Sounds like a perfect fit for a website I'm working on. Would love to feature some of your writing.
psyched you are pursuing a sequel. you are going to have one feroucious resume when you are done with school!
Thanks, Molli. Dub it.
very very cool post...thanx!
Thanks for sharing Molli.

Troy - will do. I'm aiming to be in England in April if all goes well. I think I must go to Bangface Weekender this year...
