African Tuesday - Lucky Dube Lived & Loved Reggae In South Africa
-
Artist:

Track:
As many moggers pay tribute to one legendary African artist, the late Miriam Makeba, I am reminded of another lost poet: Lucky Dube. Lucky was murdered by a carjacker in Johannesburg one year ago, in October 2007. [ReggaeInPeace] He is survived by a legacy of positive reggae music that continues to uplift people during hard times, all around the world. Enjoy these fine tunes and let the music move you:
Lucky Dube - "House Of Exile":
"Sins of the Flesh":
"Hold On":
I don't usually go for this kind of digital-sounding reggae riddim, but it's easy to make an exception where Lucky Dube is concerned.
It would have been interesting to hear what Lucky Dube would have sang about Obama.
I wanted to post a tune called "Freedom Fighter" too, but I wasn't sure it's a Lucky Dube song. Sounds a lot like Eek-A-Mouse with his bong-bong-biddy-bong style skat. Anyone else know this tune and can verify? Baudolino, Mindful?

"Freedom Fighter" is a Lucky Dube track - here it is (apologies for the rather unexpected cut off of the last few seconds). His style on it does owe a lot to Ripton Hylton, who took the name "Eek-a-Mouse" from a less than successful Jamaican racehorse. Having bet repeatedly on the animal when it was something of a donkey, to the hilarity of his friends it won the first race when he didn't bet on it.
Lucky Dube was of course a great loss, and the circumstances of his murder sadly reminds us just how far Mandela's "Rainbow Nation" still has to go. Many fear that 2010's football World Cup may be blighted by robberies and shootings as economic growth continues not to improve life at the bottom
Nice one, Molli. Prisoner was one of my favorite albums growing up. The song about his father was very special.
thanks molli, can't believe it has been over a year since his tragic conclusion, it is such a sad story for a great artist
Cheers for this post, great tunes... really glad to hear them. Always glad for african tuesday
Got turned onto Lucky when I lived in the Virgin Islands back in the days. What a voice! Thanks for the reminder..Remembering both he and Ms.Makeba is a must.
