Would You Trade Your Current Job To Be A Rock Star?
Yep - so would 1 out of 5 Brits and probably 1 out of 3 Americans as well. A scientific study, conducted by the O2 Undiscovered music program, revealed that 20% of the British population who responded to a poll would prefer to be employed in the music biz. Respondents said they would kiss their current job goodbye to pursue a music career if they felt they had the chance. Even more interesting, it's mostly "builders" who want to be musicians, with doctors as the second most wishful profession. According to NME's report:
Three quarters of those surveyed said they had not been encouraged at school or by their parents to pursue a career in the music industry. Around half said there was not enough information about careers in the industry provided by schools.
See NME.com for more of the specifics. Would YOU trade your current job for something in the music biz? If so, what do you currently do and what role would you prefer? To be in a band? A singer? A music critic? Journalist? Often, just proclaiming your wish "out loud" can start you on the road to achieving it!

A rock star? I'd trade my current job to be a roadie!
Well.. I don't think my family would be too happy if I quit being a Mom. However, I love music.. my whole family is 100% supportive of what I am doing. In fact I go to Nashville to do some surround sound mixing this month. If they didn't support me or I didn't like doing this.. there would be NO way I could do it.
I have always wanted to be a musician and I am. I have the best of both worlds.
I'd wanna be Stevie Wonders dresser
When builders become musicians you end up with Oasis!
well i don't have a job yet to quit, but I would absolutely love to be in a band or be a songwriter (if I had talent). Tour manager would be awesome too, I think.
Continuing on from Lord Alfreston's post when morose motherf**kers become musicians you end up with Coldplay
does it mean I would have to take a pay cut.......oh wait I am a teacher, who am I kidding
I'd trade a million dollar lottery ticket to be a broke musician."Hey kid, quit university and come on tour with us!" - yup, i'd do that too. "Hey, do you want to move to India and join a sitar symphony?" -hells yes.
it's a shame that good music and popular music aren't the same thing anymore, it just means there are too many people trying to make music for the millions of dollars, not the millions of people.
at least, that's what I think.
oh no doubt. buuut i think the closest ill ever get to it is a fake plastic guitar controller in my brothers living room.
i am already employed as a rock star. (yeah, right.) ;d
Would you quite your job to be a rock critic?!?!!? I thought you said "rock star" not "frustrated rock star".
If I had Led Zeppelin's or Macca's bank account, hell yeah.
No thanks! I don't want 4235235.5 sets of eyes on me!
^ For the rock star part.
Currently trying to get into music/PR field, so that should answer the rest ;)
With the fact that I get motion sick just thinking about riding around in a bus, I'll have to stick with my desk job :(
Rock Star - F**k Yeah 'Something in the Music Biz? - maybe/maybe not...I was in the music biz for a bit not so appealing unless you're singing onstage and have a champagne and caviar dream lifestyle...
No way. I like the fortune, but I don't want the fame. I'll stick to my low-paying writing career.
Only one out of three?! What do these people do for a living that's better than rock star?
For years, my dream job was to be a back up singer in a touring band because I could belt my heart out every night but no one would recognize me in my "off hours." I was probably inspired by the Talking Heads concert film "Stop Making Sense." Those ladies ruled.
