After a day of rest and recharging camera batteries, I'm going to hop down to Long Beach (near L.A.) for the Caribbean Summer Festival on Sunday. Almost 12 hours of dancehall/reggae FI-YAH in the sun/under the stars/next to the ocean. What's more, the event is headlined by Shabba Ranks in his first west coast appearance in I can't remember how long! For those who don't know, Shabba is oft cited as the biggest influence on many of today's biggest dancehall stars. He paved the perilous road that brought dancehall to the mainstream spotlight in the early-90's with tunes like "Mr. Loverman" and "Ting-A-Ling." And, as if that wasn't reason enuff to make the trek, the lineup also features Lady Saw, Junior Reid, Warrior King, Cham and many others! From noon to 10pm, I'll be front and center the most exciting stage on the west coast. And I'll be walking on air all next week.

If you're a reggae/dancehall fan on the west coast, I highly recommend this festival. Tickets are still available and you can even buy them at the gate on Sunday. Check the official website for the full lineup and more info:

Anyone else have plans to go to this event on Sunday? Let me know - us moggers gotta stick together! (And i don't know a SOUL in Long Beach.)

The version of "Mr Loverman" you posted is a cover of the (far superior) version he cut with Gussie Clarke on Deborahe Glasgow's "Champion Lover" riddim. Deborahe was the first UK female singer to be signed to record an LP for a Jamaican label, in about 1989; sadly, she died very young of cancer of the lymph nodes, in 1994, and has been largely forgotten.
In an attempt to redress the balance, here, from "Rappin With The Ladies" are Shabba and Debbie from 1990, backed by Steely & Cleevie
oh my Jah Baudolino! i had no idea! thanks a million for addressing this. as noted in my part of the "Reggae Scrapbook," Steelie and Cleevie ruled the tune for much of the late 80's/early 90's until Sly and Robbie reclaimed the riddim throne...
