Have you heard of this band, Alabama 3 (or A3 as they're known in the US)? I haven't heard their music yet, but I definitely need to check them out. A press release I received today claims the founding members met at a house party in London where one was "singing Hank Williams songs over pounding house beats." OK, I'm intrigued! It goes on to say:
Right from the start, they created groundbreaking work effortlessly fusing gospel, country and blues with house music. Alabama 3 broke down the barriers between line dancers and ravers and writers began referring to their unique oeuvre as "Chemical Country." The band sang, rapped, and preached in heavy Southern accents and inserted samples of cult leader Jim Jones' preaching. At the same time the songwriting was strong and imaginative and their lyrics' dissection of contemporary U.K. culture were insightful and dryly witty. All of this was driven by vicious, pumping beats.Oh, and you may know them best for the theme song that opens each episode of HBO's "The Sopranos" which is A3's "Woke Up This Morning."Alabama 3 - "Hello... I'm johnny cash":Well, the band is releasing a retrospective album called Hits & Exit Wounds on One Little Indian later this summer. The press release describes the album:
Hits & Exit Wounds features material from Exile on Coldharbour Lane, La Peste, Power in the Blood and Outlaw plus previously unreleased material and includes their signature song "Woke Up This Morning."They will also be playing a few shows in the US in conjunction with the album's release, so be on the lookout.
