Does Your Fave Record Store Still Exist? Thurston Moore, Mike Watt +More Discuss Record Store Closures

Posted about 1 year ago
I found this on youTube with the following description:
Trailer for "I Need That Record: The Death (or Possible Survival) of The Independent Record Store."Starring: Thurston Moore, Mike Watt, Ian Mackaye, Noam Chomsky, Legs McNeil, Glenn Branca, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Chris Frantz (Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club), Pat Carney (Black Keys), BP Helium (Of Montreal), and Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers)!Coming soon...
It seems that the closing of Trash American Style - a punk record store in Danbury, CT - has led to a proactive movement to save the independent record store. A documentary was put together and will be released sometime this year. You can watch more clips from the film on INeedThatRecord's youTube channel:http://www.youtube.com/user/ineedthatrecordI Need That Record- The Last Days of Trash American Style 1Does your favorite record store still exist? Which one is/was it and in what city? Memorialize it or advertise it by commenting about it here...

  2. Wahiawa786 says My favorite "I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but I found more than expected" indie reccord store, Jelly's is alive and well in Aiea/Waimalu. The local news said something about them moving elsewhere, but as long as I can find them, that's OK with me. (The other interesting indie music store, Hungry Ear is a good 20+ miles away in Kailua and isn't open on Sunday.) They were playing all kinds of Rap on 4/14, MSO had just raided the discretionary income piggy bank, and the $5 miscellaneous music CD racks were nearly empty, so I wasn't in the mood to buy. Oh well, it beats Wal-Mart, Borders or Barnes & Noble for variety.

  3. yummygatalover says Thank my lucky stars, and knock on wood, my favorite record store "Into the Music" still is in biz. Twenty one years almost they'll have been providing us with an incredible diverse selection of new and used vinyl /compact discs. Couldn't imagine the city without them. Great post on what's goin' on.... Mike Watt says it all.in one sentence....

  4. Groon says Mine is still alive and kicking. Papa Jazz in Columbia. They sell cds, but it's really a full-on LP store, and probably the only one left in the state. There's another new store in columbia that sells records, too, and they have some great things, but they're still more of a cd store. So yeah, mine exists.

  5. mollifire says awesome! this could turn into a fabulous list of recommended record stores worldwide. i'll definitely look here next time i'm making out of town plans! i have so many faves, but i know that Jackpot Records in Portland is one of the best I have ever found. i've dumped buckets of money in that store, especially on used/rare/htf records. a few of my faves in SF have closed over the years, most recently Reverb on Haight, so i'm in need of new ones around here.

  6. Celia Chavez says Yes and almost no... Easy Street Records in Seattle is my fave record store, and they're still alive and kicking. I saw Elvis Costello at a solo in-store performance at Easy Street's opening weekend and I won't ever forget it! It's funny because E.S. actually opened up in the old Tower Records building, but is much more diverse and interesting than Tower ever was. Bud's Jazz Records, however, also in Seattle, is slated to close at the end of April. (sob!)

  9. Oatmeal says Fun! I have not found my second home in New orleans yet, no time or money. But in Cincinnati I only go to one place Shake It! Records, a label and indie store all in one. Highly recommended.

  10. Scotch says I don't really "do" record stores anymore. It's not that I don't like them, it's that they just aren't around where I live. I have to drive 65 miles just to get to a mall, and there aren't any good record stores there, unless you count, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, and Circuit City. But if I lived in So Cal still, I'd be shopping at Rhino Records, in Claremont, which is thankfully still around... I think. Oh yeah! http://www.rhinorecords.cc/about.php In my neighborhood, there was Noise, Noise, Noise, a tiny, but "concentrated" shop, Costa Mesa. Great place, and still in business AFAIK. And not a mile from there was a place called "Sight + Sound," which became Music Plus, but it was never the same after that.

  11. brz says moolifire - great question. i thought i was going to be the only one, but i see i will have to second Oatmeal's vote for "Shake It":http://www.shakeitrecords.com/ in Cincinnati. lots of vinyl, lots of used, and a great selection of country, plus lots of toys, books, magazines, etc. also, for that hard to find Norweigan black metal album, "Magnolia Thunderpussy":http://thunderpussy.com/contact.htm in Columbus is hard to beat.

  12. Shud33 says Both of mine closed here is Sac. One being Tower Records. Although, Russ Solomon founder of Tower, reopened the original Tower Records on Broadway and has renamed it R5 Record...so it makes up for it! Photobucket

  16. brz says Scotch- i'd say it's worth the trip, but i like to drive. my wife just informed me that they're having a 15% sale on Saturday in honor of Independent "Record Store Day":http://mog.com/Misstee/blog_post/156781 have fun! peace brz
