Rebel reggae crooner, Cocoa Tea, added his support for presidential hopeful Barack Obama with a new tune called "Barack Obama". In the song, Cocoa Tea insists that his support is not about color or race (both Obama and Tea are African descent) and not about class or creed. Instead, "it's about the changes, what the Americans need" he sings. The Associated Press reported:
"The young people who are supporting him want change — and that's what he represents," said the singer, whose laid-back lyrical style made him a local star in the 1980s.He becomes the second major Caribbean musician to endorse Obama in song, joining Trinidadian calypso star Mighty Sparrow who recently recorded a track titled "Barack the Magnificent."
Here is a preview of the song (audio only):VP Records (the label that Cocoa Tea is on) will release the tribute song sometime this week. VP also releases a new reggae anthology of Cocoa Tea's tunes this week, titled Reggae Anthology: The Sweet Sound of Cocoa Tea. The CD/DVD features 36 tracks and will be available Tuesday March 11th. The compilation features his biggest tunes, like "Pirates Anthem", "Rikers Island" and "Too Young" with some of dancehall's most controversial rudies like Shabba Ranks and Buju Banton. Other songs on the anthology feature collabs with reggae favorites Cutty Ranks, Luciano and Louie Culture.AP report on the Obama tribute songReggae Anthology: The Sweet Sound of Cocoa Tea info on VP Records - tracklist and audio previews
