It's a new year and it looks like its going to be an extra yummy time to be a bass face on planet earth. Bassline house has pretty much just taken off outside the UK, the global dubstep massive grows weekly and albums from both genres will see wider distribution this year. I felt that 2007 lacked in really exciting electronic music releases (at least as far as official albums go, there were plenty of exciting mix CDs and singles released). But I think 2008 will make up for it. I heard a cut off of Scuba's upcoming LP on Mary Anne Hobbs' BBC 1 radio show last night and it sounds so delicious! I'm still rinsing and repeating his tracks on the Box of Dub collection, which are some of my top favorites of the 3 discs, so I am eager to get more of his stuff in my record box. Hotflush Recordings will release Scuba's first full length album on CD and vinyl March 9th with the single "Hard Boiled"/"Tell Her" being dropped February 24th. You can listen to "Hard Boiled" off A Mutual Antipathy about 10 minutes into Mary Anne Hobbs show, which is archived for one week only at BBC Radio 1. Other highlights from her show include the Santogold track, the Sumone dubplate and Robert Logan's "Lost Highway" tune. Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has a few shows coming up in the early '08:Jan 12 Sub Island LeipzigFeb 1 Icon BerlinMar 7 Subway RotterdamMar 28 Bournemouth UKYou can listen to the beautiful and ethereal tune "Respirator" from the Box of Dub collection from Scuba's my$pace page. You can also dl two stellar mixes by Scuba from the downloads page of the Hotflush website. For more dubstep updates and recommended listening, read "Bass Reaction" on XLR8R.com

  1. Oatmeal says So about those great mixes, let me know. I also think the album wise electronic releases were lack lustre, but I am in the market for a few good mixes.

  2. Oatmeal says Well, I have not gone fully into the dubstep. I was a big broken beat guy for a while, but that stuff has gotten mostly stale. So I like the slick dub step that is not too scary. But usually http://www.brokenbeatradio.com/ is more to my liking. But I am an album guy now that I am married and a dad, (not hearing dj's much) so that is why I want to know what you were thinking.

  3. FluxCapacitor says Thanks for the Scuba rec, and that stat about Burial's albums sales in one SF store is interesting. I wonder if he can blaze a trail for other dubsteppers to follow. On the other hand, I've heard dubsteb fans say Burial isn't dubstep...and I tend to agree...it's far superior to anything I've heard...but I'm still at the beginning of my search...

  4. mollifire says Burial's first album was much more of a dubstep album than the recent one. Untrue is more experimental electronica coming from a dubstep background. I'm not all that impressed with Untrue and I didn't buy the album. As far as dubstep goes, no one can touch Kode 9 and Spaceape. My other faves this year are Scuba and Pinch.

  5. FluxCapacitor says I'm confused! You said above that "dubstep is def catching on in the Bay" in relation to Untrue and on my Mog you said "I'm loving this album..." Now it's not dubstep and you're not impressed? I only mention this because I've noticed a general dissing of Untrue from the "real" dubstep fans since it's broke through to the mainstream and featured on every hipsters end of year list. Although I'm not assuming that's your reason. Why the turnaround in your case?
