Experimental metal label Southern Lord added some new music to their mp3 page this week, and there are some gems in there I know a few moggers will be thrilled to find. My favorite is the new Earth song "The Driver" from their forthcoming new album The Bees Made Honey in the Lions' Skull.Earth's productions have been non-stop this year - they released Hibernaculum on CD/DVD and vinyl in early summer, toured the US with label mates Sunn O))) and have been in the Seattle studio AVAST(2) recording the new Bees album. Next up is 2 shows in the UK as part of the Portishead-curated All Tomorrow's Parties December 9th and 10th. The new album features legendary guitarist Bill Frisell as a special guest on three tracks and it will be released in February of next year. From what I've heard of the album so far, it sounds like Frisell adds that element that takes this band to the next level. I bet it will have more mainstream appeal, but as a side effect of the band's genius finally being fully realized musically. I have the impression that Dylan Carlson has trouble finding the right match for a companion guitarist. He seems excited about Frisell's participation and I'm glad he is working with a classically experienced musician now. If you are not familiar with Bill Frisell's name, give his wiki a glance. He is a Grammy-award winning jazz musician and composer who has worked with many international musicians since his first album was released in 1983.The other 2 gems among the new Southern Lord mp3s is a collaboration between Japan's most notorious noise makers, Merzbow and Boris, and a song from the upcoming SL re-issue of Burning Witch's Crippled Lucifer. The Merzbow/Boris collab is titled "Flower, Sun, Rain" and it's a live recording that is available on Boris' Rock Dream album. A studio recording of this song will be included on the next Boris album, Smile, which is due for release in April 08 on Southern Lord Records. The Burning Witch track "History of Hell" is off their album Crippled Lucifer (Ten Psalms For Our Lord of Light) which Southern Lord is about to re-issue. Burning Witch was an early doom metal band comprised of musicians from Thorr's Hammer, who eventually went on to form Khanate, Goatsnake, Sunn O))) and others. For all the info about the material on Crippled Lucifer and a brief history about the bands, read my previous post about Burning Witch.
