Betty Davis Gets Funky On Friday & So Should You

Posted 10 months ago

My favorite funktress of all time is the lovely Betty Davis. Some say this vixen turned Miles Davis onto the freaky, funky side of music and introduced him to Jimi Hendrix. If this is true, we can pretty much thank Betty for my all-time favorite Miles Davis album, Bitches Brew...

For me, Funky Friday isn't finished until the phat lady sings. And here she is, the Foxy Lady herself:

"Your Mama Wants Ya Back"

"F.U.N.K." (1975):

"Anti Love Song"

Light in the Attic Records has FREE mp3s of "Anti Love Song" and "He Was A Big Freak":

Great stuff!  The band is superb, and her vocals have such attitude, personality, authority, intensity, syncopation, originality.

I wonder what ever happened to the bio pic that was supposed to come out on her..As long as it isn't Beyonce in the title role, I'm there.

Biopics are almost always somewhat erzatz because the actor can never match the original.  In this case, maybe it's worth trying to do the impossible because she sounds, from this post's tracks, as if her character would be quite a dynamic person to see on the screen.  Too bad there doesn't seem to be video footage of her in any of these YouTube items.  At this very moment, somewhere out there, is the real Betty Davis electrifying the people around her as she goes about her daily life?

I hope so..here's what it sez at Light In The attic

Tragically, these days Betty Davis is dead broke, living in the Pittsburgh ghetto. For the first time, her critically adored first two albums are being lovingly re-mastered from the original master tapes by Light In The Attic Records to sound as ferocious and revolutionary as they did when they first sprung on an unsuspecting world in the early '70s. These reissues mark the first time that Betty will receive proper royalties for her music on CD.

In addition to the restoration of the incredible original cover art, the compelling and heartbreaking liner notes written by author and respected soul music scholar Oliver Wang (O-Dub/Soul Sides) include her second interview in many decades, making these essential reissues for any soul, progressive punk, or funk-rock collection.

Here's an article on her that goes into some depth..
