Beloved Reggae Star Lucky Dube Gunned Down In S.Africa

Posted over 2 years ago
It's a very sad day for reggae music fans. Internationally acclaimed and beloved reggae singer Lucky Dube was gunned down in Johannesburg South Africa last night. Police are saying that the shooting resulted from a "botched carjacking" as he was dropping his teenage son and daughter off at a relative's home. Fortunately, his children were not harmed physically, but will traumatized from watching their father get killed. Lucky Dube was one of Africa's most successful artists, producing 22 albums in 25 years, several of which went platinum, with lyrics that described apartheid-era South African culture. He was a voice of the people whose lyrics and life were uplifting and hopeful during times of struggle while teaching the rest of the world about the hardships of apartheid in South Africa. Billboard reports the loss with a quote from one of the people who managed his music career:
Commenting on Dube's death, Jay Savage, managing director of Sony ATV Music South Africa, said: "Lucky was the greatest African reggae artist and it was always a pleasure working with someone who is unquestionably the best in their field. He was always a bit of a maverick but knew how to act decisively which all make for a songwriter who is good to work with. His death is an unbelievable shock."
According to an iol report, the DP of the region commended his musical role in South Africa's culture:
Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said: "For more than two decades he confronted pertinent social and political issues through his music, bringing to the fore the pain and suffering of many South Africans."
His most recent album is Respect, released last year on Warner. This is not the car Dube was driving when he was carjacked...http://www.luckydubemusic.com/

  4. Nassali says It is a shame to lose him at the hands of his own brothers whom he fought for. Lucky Dube was a great singer, focused and great concern for society good. Most of all, I admired him for his professional ethics, he would always start his show on time, no delaying tactics, and would never cheat his fans even for five minutes, he would give his best performance throughout the show. May the Lord have mercy on his soul. Rita S.L.
