WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Getting the formalities out of the way...Stopping smoking...etc

Posted over 2 years ago
Hi. I'm new here. I'm originally from the USA, now residing in the UK. I'm a happily-married 39-year-old kid who enjoys most types of music.I stopped smoking three days ago and joined you Moggers shortly after that. Coincidence? Is Mogging destined to take the place of my recently banished nicotine habit? We'll see.I've done a couple of posts so far that have generated no interest whatsoever. HA! Maybe because I hadn't introduced myself? Maybe because my taste in music is crap. Oh well, I like what I like and I dislike what I dislike, often for quite irrational reasons. If I don't like what you like, I'm sure you won't take it personally...or maybe you will. I won't blame you, because I can be the same way. If someone criticises Joe Strummer, for instance, I will thoughtfully consider what they have to say and then mentally file them away under "Nutcases". Irrational, see? But I've rambled enough... In honour of my new healthy lifestyle: a live version of a Butthole Surfers fave. I hope you enjoy. :)

  1. B42 says Sorry about your less than stellar welcome to Mog, a lot of us used to go out of our way to make the newcomer feel at home but then the dam broke, and we seem to have forgotten our manners,...so, Welcome and enjoy your experience here. Share and be shared and yes the Butthole Surfers do rock, fun stuff. Good Luck with the cigs, that book everyone was talking about helped a lot of folks. Mog On!

  2. mokeyjr says Thanks, B42. I didn't take it personally...I forgot my manners in not introducing myself. What's this book everyone was talking about? The gum I'm using has gotten me through these first couple of days, but I can use any help that's out there! Thanks again for the welcome!

  5. dermahrk says I smoked for 15 years, quit for 17, smoked for two, and quit eight years ago. I strongly recommend the nicotine patch. It made it much easier to get through the crucial first two weeks. Once you hit two weeks it becomes easier. But I still would love to smoke and breathe deeply when I walk behind a smoker on the street. How could I start again after 17 years? Traveling on business with nothing to do at night but sit in the hotel bar with fellow travelers. That, and stupendous stupidity.... Anyhoo, yes, welcome. It helps to announce you're a newbie, as not only are new moggers starting all the time, but people frequently change their avatar. I often scan the avatar instead of the screen name. Interesting that you are a transplanted US citizen living over there. And obviously a fan of Little Britain. Though I live in the US, I subscribe to Brit music mags and read about the series in those, then rented the DVDs. Some very funny stuff, but the recently(?) released third season seemed to be their weakest.

  6. mokeyjr says Hellooo, dermahrk! Thank you for the welcome! I'm finding that the nicotine gum is helping me with the cravings, but at certain times (after dinner, say) the habit kicks in and I just miss the "ritual"...I'm sure you know what I mean. I could have just as easily gone with the patch, but chose the gum for some reason. Oh well, it seems to be working...so far. Sounds like you've got it whipped, though. Gives me a bit of inspiration that it can be done! I think some of the shows over here are really good...much better than the US, in some cases. Little Britain really was hilarious the first couple of seasons, but I think you're right that they kind of lost their way a bit. The Office and Extras are really good, too. (I'm sure you know The Office...have you seen Extras? Really funny stuff.) I'd recommend The Mighty Boosh, too, if you're not already aware of that one. And don't you think the UK music mags are a helluva lot better? I mean, you can actually read about music! Who'da thunk it? Thanks again, and I'm sure we'll be seeing each other around.

  7. dermahrk says Oh, god, I am SO addicted to Brit Music mags - subscribe to MOJO, Q, The Word and Uncut and am now lusting after Record Collector. I also get Paste and Goldmine here in the states but, yes, the Brits have it down. Why the hell is the US stuck with effing Rolling Stone, Spin, teenybop and Metal magazines? I have no idea. Love Ricky Gervais and have seen all of the Brit (and none of the US) The Office, and most of Extras (waiting for it to come round again on HBO on Demand). The Mighty Boosh I have never heard of, and I will have to check Netflix for that. Oh, and dropping the nicotine CAN be done. I know at least one person who got dependent on the gum, then started on the smoking again, now does both! LOL!

  8. mokeyjr says Yup, MOJO and Uncut are my absolute favorites...I notice you didn't mention the NME...what a crap magazine that is. Mighty Boosh can get a bit surreal, but it's hilarious if you like that sort of thing. Oh please don't let me get dependent on the gum!

  10. goodmusiconly says _"If someone criticises Joe Strummer, for instance, I will thoughtfully consider what they have to say and then mentally file them away under “Nutcases”_ ... hah! I agree wholeheartedly (click "here":http://mog.com/goodmusiconly/blog_post/84351). Sorry if we missed you the first time around, MOG is growing by leaps and bounds. But we're an accepting bunch, and you'll probably find it to be as addictive as nicotine, only healthier. Hello and Welcome!

  13. chucky says Hey...welcome to mog. Used to be, we could catch each new person coming in the door and give them a warm welcome - now it's almost impossible. But, I do like your attitude:) I plan to stop smoking in 2 days (of course, I've planned to quit every few months for a year or so now..so). I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us.
