THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

the best that you've heard in quite some time

Posted about 1 year ago

For four weeks, Mike Viola (you know, that amazing genius who wrote that song about me - sorry, never gets old!) played every Friday night at Joe's Pub. It was altogether wonderful.

Before his sets, Kelly Jones (not that one) played her entire current album live. I'm going to be honest, I wasn't thrilled. I mean, that's like a dozen songs - pretty long opening act, especially when the show starts at 11:30PM and you're seeing it every week. But the songs are good. Very good.

By week four, I simply had to have the album (even though I didn't have money to get home at 3-somethingAM), and Dollie was kind enough to pay for our copy. And the cab.

Now I listen to She-BANG! every day. This is a good sign, and I'll tell you why: It's chock full of super romantic happily-in-love songs. Before this, I was getting back into The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, and while that's so good, it's also so bad.

I couldn't decide which song to play you, but I'm going with the first one I ever heard. (It's also not currently playing in MySpace, so bonus). Listen to the sunshiny "Same Songs" and get into it.

I just got exposed to Kelly this week, from a series of comments on a powerpop blog. Heavily endorsed by our own Michael McCartney (TheTimeMachine), I just checked out song samples on CD Baby a couple of hours ago.

I have to agree that this is pretty entrancing. And want to point out that Mike Viola recently joined up with Bleu and released a CD under the group name The Major Labels.
