Pascal Past Blasting
so, it was lifetimes ago, but still - good memories, y'know. there used to be this indie rock band in vancouver (canadaland) called blaise pascal. it was right on that early / mid 90-s indie lo-fi tip, with some sonic youthy sounds and definite pavementesque touches, with little hits of electricity and chaos thrown in with the melodics and distortion.
they did some compilation songs, and put out a sweet little EP - "e-filter" - and i think that was around 1993 or so. i could be wrong.
shortly after the EP, though, i found myself in need of a band, and blaise pascal happened to be in need of a drummer. it was (for a little while) meant to be.
we played some truly amazing shows, recorded an album, did a little touring, and then, we vanished into our separate futures. we opened for some great bands - back in 94 - 95 era - probably because i moved to seattle. that's a whole 'nother story.
so, i recently came across my copy of the EP - and while i wasn't part of the recording of this little gem, it still holds some attachments for me - partly because it still sounds pretty good, and partly because i remember playing this song "circuit" live a few times. the one that sticks out most in my mind is when we were asked to do a little week long tour with Pavement - doing a West Coasty leg. supposed to be from San Francisco to Saskatoon - but due to border hassles (even then them borders were pretty tough with touring bands) - so we had to skip the SF and just drive straight to Portland, getting there - to the club, which - i cannot remember the name of right now - i remember lots of things, but sometimes these details escape me - and it drives me crazy. we were playing with Rollerskate Skinny too.
anyhowz, we get to the club, and basically have to run in, plug in, and play. no rest, no soundcheck, no time to shake the highway off our skin, and we still only had enough time to play maybe 4 songs. Circuit was one of them, along with our cover of Dream Syndicate's "Tell Me When It's Over". it was a stressful adrenalin high rush, but - i think we all loved it.
so - yeah - here's some pre-me BP. if i can either dig my copy of the album out or transfer the vinyl to digital - i'll throw up some of the blaise songs i contributed to, but in the meantime - enjoy this little lo-fi gem.
