WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Last Night with the Gutter Twins

Posted about 1 year ago
So - it's thursday, i'm at work, and i am so tired. Last night we made it out to see the Gutter Twins perform at the Avalon - a nice venue, but one i don't find myself going to often. The last time i was there, in fact, was to see Greg Dulli.

this was the last stop on their US tour, and there i was again - this time it was Dulli and Mark Lanegan. Not a show i would have liked missing.

the lights were low, the stage was set, the music was perfect, the vocals killed me. every song. i'm hit again.

Falling somewhere closer to the Twilight Singers than the Afghan Whigs, and closer to Lanegan's solo material than his Screaming Tree sounds, the Gutter Twins move dark and soulfully under your skin until they've got your blood pumping and you can't stop and breath until they say it's ok.

Hearing these two sing together live is an experience. almost religious. definitely spiritual - but i don't mean that in a cheezy way - i mean it in a dark and sexy way.

Sometimes Mark Lanegan is standing there on stage, striking his Jim Morrison pose (he did a whole lot of just standing there - but i forgive him - he doesn't really need to move because his vocals do that for him), singing with that voice of his, and Greg Dulli is facing him, playing his little R&B Rock guitar riffs with a cigarette dangling, and it's all just perfect.

song here - is from the Twilight Singers - but you get the idea.

  1. dachmo says Wow, I don't know why I've always ignored Greg Dulli and the bands he's involved with, can't think of a single reason. This is a great song, now again I've heard of the Gutter Twins but have for some reason ignored them as well. I've got to straighten out my priorities. Thanks for the post.
