Not Your Usual Top 20 List….(part deux)

Posted over 3 years ago

Not a single comment so far on part one, so why not go on and post part two? And so it goes...

10. Artist: Jeff Buckley Album: So Real Must-listen Track: Dream Brother Comments: "So Real" is a bunch of alternate takes of songs off of his "Grace" album (as well as a few additional songs), but I prefer this album to "Grace" for the reason that it seems to me a little more raw and natural. Less production and more Jeff. I always wonder what it would be like if Jeff were still alive, but if this album is his legacy, then it is surely a good legacy to leave.

9. Artist: Brian Wright & The Waco Tragedies Album: Dog Ears Must-listen Track: Downtown Eloise Comments: I saw Brian Wright (sans the Waco Tragedies) during the "Hotel Cafe" tour about a year ago, and since then I have been hooked. It's part alt-rock, part bluegrass and part soul, but whatever it may be it is damn good. The music is simple: guitar, piano, harmonica and small drum kit. But the sounds that come out are as complex as the lyrics. Brian Wright's voice sounds like the love child of Joe Cocker and Merle Haggard, if that's possible. Me likey.

8. Artist: State Radio Album: The Barn Sessions Must-listen Track: Camilo Comments: Yet another alternate take album - from their album "Us Against the Crown". The band rehearses in an old barn not too far from my apartment (another hometown band, yes), hence the title of the album. The band is one of my all time favs, and this album grabs me for the same reason's that Buckley's "So Real" does - it's raw, somewhat unrehearsed and the band takes some liberties that they wouldn't otherwise take on the final studio album. The first post I ever put up on MOG was about the song "Camilo", here is the video:

7. Artist: Fall Out Boy Album: Infinity On High Must-listen Track: Hum Hallelujah Comments: I know, I know. Teen-angst, emo, power-pop? WTF? I don't know what it is, but this album is VERY catchy, at least to me. The whole "scene" thing of theirs, well, they can keep. I am all set with that. But I really do love their music and this album is great. Screw you for judging me.

6. Artist: Death Cab For Cutie Album: The John Byrd EP Must-listen Track: Why You'd Want To Live Here Comments: I picked this album for a few reasons. First, I listen to it at least three times a week, maybe more. Second, it has two of my favorite songs by DCFC, "We Looked Like Giants" and "Why You'd Want To Live Here", in what I think is the best version of each song. I've honestly become infatuated with this band over the last year, especially Ben Gibbard because I think the man is a genius. Even though this is an EP, it's still a fantastic album.

5. Artist: Explosions In The Sky Album: All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone Must-listen Track: What Do You Go Home To? Comments: If you like instrumentals that will melt your face, then get this album. Yet another band that I have become infatuated with, and for good reason. This album is a prime example as to why these guys put on such amazing live shows: they are INCREDIBLE musicians. All instrumental bands/albums rarely hold my attention, but I constantly listen to this. It puts me in a trance (see melting face reference above - and see video below).

4. Artist: Matt Nathanson Album: At The Point (Live) Must-listen Track: Lost Myself In Search Of You Comments: So, this is the first official "live" album on this list. While this album doesn't cover the entire catalog of Matt's songs, it contains all the goodies and also displays how fun seeing him live can be. His banter with the audience is as equally entertaining as the music is. , and the album does well to portray that. It also helps that he covers one of my favorite songs of all time, Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits (see part one of the list).

3. Artist: Justin Timberlake Album: Futuresex/Lovesounds Must-listen Track: My Love Comments: What can I say? I am a happily married, 29 year old man who likes JT. I admit it. (TroyPowers, help me out here) This album is just ill, and if you don't find yourself dancing or singing along to this album then you must not have blood flowing through your veins. Anyone catch the concert on HBO a few months back?

2. Artist: John Mayer Album: The Village Sessions Must-listen Track: Belief Comments: So, JT and John Mayer back to back on this list, huh? I feel like a 13 year old girl. But in all seriousness, I think Mayer is a wunderkind with the guitar. This album, a limited release, contains acoustic takes of songs from his "Continuum" album, with Ben Harper hopping in on slide guitar. There are only 6 songs on the album, but I could play it over and over again without ever getting sick of it. While Mayer is unbelievable on an electric guitar, I think his acoustic stuff is even better.

1. Artist: !!! Album: Myth Takes Must-listen Track: Bend Over Beethoven Comments: This album really took my by surprise, in a number of ways. First, I got it because a friend of a friend of a friend recommended it to me. And that person also recommended a different album, so I got the wrong one. Secondly, because upon first listen, my initial reaction was "Eh, it's okay". But it really is something that you have to throw on the headphones and listen to carefully. I burned a copy to keep in my car, and I think I played it too much because it doesn't work any more. That's a sign of a good album. The album is funky, witty and thoroughly enjoyable. It's electronica. It's rock. It's music you can dance to. I want to lay it down gently and make sweet love to it. I love it AND I am in love with it. So there.

That's my list. Love it. Hate it. Smack it in the face. Just don't make it bleed. MOG hates the sight of blood.

(Oh, the song attached. Completely random choice, but good for melting faces.)

  2. chucky says I've never owned a Fall Out Boy album but I also haven't ever heard a song by them that wasn't incredibly catchy - so you are totally forgiven for that. I'm not sure about JT and Mr. Mayer..haha. I only have one !!! song. But, I did notice that it crept up on me without me being quite aware of it.
