Wow. It's been well over a month since I posted. Where's the time gone?
It's good to be back though. Anyway....
So in my last post that was all about me, I mentioned that if I could have a song that was the soundtrack to me life it would be "Achilles' Last Stand" by Led Zeppelin. Well, unfortunately I am a fickle human being with little control over my ever-changing tastes. This is true in both my life and within my musical tastes. Because of that, I think I will have to retire Achilles and move on to a younger, fitter and more attractive song. Achilles, we had a great run. What was it? 15 years? We laughed. We loved. We cried. We went through is all. But just like Ole' Yeller, it's time to take you into the yard and put a bullet in your head. You've been replaced.
I am pretty sure I have extolled the virtues of this band in earlier posts, but I am too lazy to go back and look, so you'll just have to suffer through this verbal fellatio.
Lately, as in the last 3 weeks, I have listened primarily to Explosions In The Sky. Walking the streets, working out at the gym, going to bed at night.....basically whenever possible. My mom was pissed when we were having dinner and my ipod wasn't turned off. She was yelling at me and whatnot, but I couldn't hear her because my headphones were too loud.
Now, with all the listening I have been doing, I have come to the conclusion that this band can make even the most mundane of things absolutely EPIC. Walking upstairs now feels like I am walking onto the court to warm up for the NCAA basketball championship. Driving home from work has now turned into the bank robbery scene from "Heat". Typing this MOG post makes me feel like I am writing the greatest novel of all time. You get the picture.
It's no wonder these guys from Austin, TX did the soundtrack to the "Friday Night Lights" movie. Their songs are winding.....full of dramatic down turns which then flow into progressive jams that could peel paint off of walls. Everything has a build-up, then a crescendo and finally a fading point that makes you feel like you have accomplished something. Even if that something is pulling clothes out of the dryer.
My suggestion would be to load up on a few of their albums, toss them on the MP3 player and put those albums on shuffle whilst going about your day. Trust me, that latte you're getting at Starbucks is going to taste that much better for the sole fact that you may or may not have just fought your way through Mordor to get it. At least you will have felt that way, minus the blood and the short people with hairy feet.
