MOG MOG

MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

I am interrupting HHT for this announcement: I like Mew. I give up. I burned a copy of "And the Glass Handed Kites" to listen to in my car along with a bunch of other things the MOGsters have recommended to me, and it finally came around for me on a longish car trip a week ago. By the third song in, I'm thinking this is the most brilliant record I've ever heard, and then I realize, damn. This is Mew. Now I have to admit to Dale I like this over-the-top full-of-themselves bunch of Danish pretty boys with their over-layered vocals and their dumb album covers and their pretentious . . . brilliance-nious. Which isn't even a word.

Sigh. This record is like a communal shoe-gazing LSD trip. The only consolation I have is that their website design sucks balls. I have to be crude, because it's not fair! Something about this band makes me want to not like them. I think it's the cover of this record. Are they kidding? And their scarves, and maybe their long, black jackets. Definitely the scarves.

But I can't stop listening to it today, it came around on the car-cd-player shuffle again, and it's not coming off. I brought it in to work to put on my pc here so I can just give in to it, and I'll take it to the beach. My husband is going to hate it. . .

I can't understand how you could not like Mew. They may be slightly full of themselves, but as a musician I honestly think they are one of, if not the most talented bands in the world right now. Considering that, there are more bands than not, that are far more full of themselves than Mew that can't even merit their boastfulnesses.

As for the website, I don't think it's horrible and I used to be into design a bit myself. The fact that Mew actually updates their website and their myspace page themselves makes that okay with me.

Mew is amazing, just embrace it. And if you haven't heard their older cd, "Frengers" you need that cd too.

I have to say - these [pretty] boys have fulfilled my need for some good 'ol fuzzy shoegazing seriously lacking for quite some time . . . like the [scarved] love-child born of a musical orgy featuring Dinosaur Jr., MBV & The Smashing Pumpkins.

Zookeeper's Boy also from And The Glass-Handed Kites

I recently saw Mew live, and weird visuals containing violin-playing kitties aside, it just affirmed my attraction to their music. It's got so many elements that should clash - heavy metal, 70s synth, pure pop, fragile lyrics - but instead are completely captivating.

I'm jealous - they were in town not too long ago, but I wasn't able to make it. It's good to know to expect a good show next time around at least! I mean, violin kitties are reason enough right??

Dale says:

Oh yes, the live show is what got me completely hooked onto them. I saw them in October, opening for Kasabian, and they were magical, no other words for it. Their sense of visuals is waaaay off-kilter, tho.

Yup. Violin-playing kitties and nipple monsters, too.

ROFLMAO and crying right now . . . thanks ebuzz for that cartoon, I feel so much better.

Justin ::: don't take it personally. I do like the record, it's just the pretentiousness I hate. And I'll thumb-wrestle you on that website design. As a wise friend of mine said recently, every time a website shows a scrollbar, a kitten dies. Think about it.

That is the most unusable, unreadable band website I have ever seen. And I've seen a lot. Black, teeny fonts, unreadable hyperlinks, music that plays automatically - Jakob Nielsen is probably aiming his giant water pistol at their heads right now.

Archie ::: you just made it worse by posting video!!! But I knew that's the risk I was going to take. That song is bloody brilliant. See Dale, I'm not even cussing.

kelly ::: I agree with Anna, an explanation of the nipple monsters is in order. please. I need another laugh.

Dale ::: you truly are EVIL.

I like them too!! I saw them live a month ago and their performance was great. I was happy to hear a lot of material from their album Frengers. I like it better than And the Glass Handed Kites.

Fitting that Dale was the first to post on this page...........I do think he has turned to the dark side though

I don't know a lot about Mew, except their mention every 5 posts, but Michelle, your struggle and final acceptance of them, despite their wack-ass web site, is funny as hell. Now if everybody admits that deep down, despite all our ill wishes toward Mew, we really adore the scarf wearers..will they go away.

mktackabery says:

probably not Cody. The name's Mew, which is what cats do. And cats, you must know, are emperors and empresses of passive-aggressive totalitarianism. They tamed humans into taking care of them for the last 8000 years you know . . .

Ummm, I've not given into the evilness that is Mew. Not sure why they are so adored since what I've heard sounds too much like bands like Travis, Coldplay & that ilk to me, who I like from a distance & some of their songs but just too wussy for me, lol.

I know, I thought that too Aug, but then the whole record just hits you like a bullet to the brain. I can't explain it.

I'm not giving in. I'll wait a little longer. I was going to give in but after reading your post Michelle I feel that one of us must stay by the ferry before the Mew river to tell the newbies what happened to the others that crossed. :)

The visuals used at shows are inspired by Jonas' dreams. Apparently, one of these dreams must've involved monsters with nipples for eyes.

I wish I had a picture, but I guess that's another reason to go see them live.

Maybe that's why he wears the scarf. It's protection against the nipple monsters?
