WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

HHT: Michael Franti

Posted over 2 years ago
One of my favorite artists: Michael Franti. I got into him when he dropped The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, and I've followed him ever since. He's true to himself, and he's true to his message, which was heavily inflenced by Gil Scott-Heron at the beginning of his career. This is him with his band, Spearhead, at Coachella:From 2001's Stay Human: Rock the NationDisposable Heroes' first single, "Television, The Drug of the Nation":

  2. Archie Leach23 says Yes - he's a favorite of mine as well...I've always been impressed by his honesty & willingness to just lyrically pour out his guts. I remember him from the Beatnigs days [the 1st incarnation of Television, Drug...was from that band he headed back in the day]...they took punk & industrial and mashed it together with heavily political & social lyrics, hence their label being Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles. 4. ciphermedia says Great to see/hear those clips Michelle. Have never followed him closely, but have always liked the stuff I've heard & seen. The Gil Scott-Heron link seems obvious now that you mention it. (In fact, I've got a great 12" by him called Re-Ron about the re-election of Ronald Reagan).

  6. TroyPowers says I never really got into Spearhead, but they made a song I loved probably 10 years back called "You Can't Sing Our Song" or something to that effect. Anybody know it? I've got the single around here somewhere.

  11. Librarianguish says I had the great pleasure of seeing Franti and Spearhead Sunday evening to round out my visit to the Sasquatch festival. Oddly enough, due to wind issues they ended up moving his show to a different stage, and he ended up playing for about 90 minutes (rather than the 40 or so he would have had). He was absolutely amazing - and it couldn't have been a better way to finish up the festival. I wormed way to the front, also - he was one of my main priorities to see while there. I'll be writing more about the whole event a little later. Thanks for sharing this today Michele!
