Sunday Covers: Sarah McLachlan sings Tom Waits

Posted about 1 year ago
On paper, Ol' 55 reads like a song to be sung with screaming guitars, a heavy drumbeat and wind in the hair. But it's really a song about the dream of those days; youth, and the dream of the American road. The dream of the endless goodbye. The frontier, the sun coming up, promises of the new that fade into greasy diners and wasted love. It's always been one of my favorites. Sarah MacLachlan's version on The Freedom Sessions is a wee bit sanitized, but it works pretty well despite the slick production. And now the sun's coming up; I'm riding with Lady Luck;freeway cars and trucks.Stars beginning to fade, and I lead the parade;Just a-wishing I'd stayed a little longer.Oh, Lord, let me tell youThat the feeling's getting stronger.

  3. dermahrk says Of course, the REAL reason reason Deadman loves this is because it reminds him of when his favorite band, the Eagles, covered it on "On The Border". Probably made for money for Tom than any other version.

  6. Bartleby says Interesting but I think Sarah's voice lacks the brokenness which this songs requires.
