WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

HHT: Crunk'in it with Cam'ron and The Diplomats

Posted over 2 years ago
By rights I shouldn't love this song. It pretty much epitomizes everything that is wrong in rap: glorification of violence, rape, and bad grammar, but . . . ah f**k it, this is a bad-ass song and I love bumpin' it in my SUV on the way home from my law firm or on the way to school. Probably just for the shocked looks I get when I jump out of the car past the skater boys smoking in front of the building. One of the Diplomats is actually called "Hell Rell." That's some tough shit, right? Are you scared? Yeah, me neither. But they're throwing cash money around! Are you hot yet? Yeah, me neither. I mean, I find nothing attractive about pseudo-gangsters who buy their clothes at the Baby Gap. But I do enjoy their, um, cover of the great Salt 'N' Pepa:I suppose there's no shame in bumpin at the club, as long as you don't bump for one of these poseurs.

  3. Sam The Artist says im not the biggest follower of the dipset clan, but one song that i know EVERY word to is "crunk muzik" a nice little warriors throwback.

  4. Spike says The music behind "Get Down" is quite compelling in and of itself, and the rap adds to it, at least it did for me when I made no effort to listen to the meaning of the words.

  5. Scotch says Hey, we all have our guilty pleasures. So who am I to judge? :) I can't say that I share your enthusiasm for this song, but I also listen to stuff I probably shouldn't listen to, like gansta-rap. Since I grew up with gangs, I pretty much hate them, but there's something undeniable about the rappers from LBC (in particular) to my West Coast-raised ears. I usually stick with the old skool, though... back when most of them had a real message. "white lines... pure as the driven snow, baby" :)

  6. mktackabery says yeah me too Scotch - but like Spike says, the music and the rap draws you in until you hear the words . . . then I found myself going, OMG, am I listening to this pile of shite? Yeah, I am. I guess it's like a candy bar . . . okay every once in a while, but a steady diet of it makes you an annoying neighbor on a plane ride.

  7. deadmandeadman says Michelle, this is one of the strangest threads i've followed in a while, So here I am, a day late n a dollar short with a quote from the Master... "Well, your true love has caught you where you know you don't belong You say 'everybody's doin' it so I guess it can't be wrong' The truth is far from you, so you know you got to lie Then you're all the time defending what you can never justify.' Some of our "guilty pleasures" (and I'm just as guilty as next) can be very destructive when one pulls back and sees the larger picture. I agree with you all, the track has an infectious groove that draws you in and the lyric is over the top enough to be given the benifit of the doubt, and maybe give it a 'comedy' pass. But the gangsta image looms large in the nation's psyche, and to their claim of "keeping it real" and "voice of the people", I say horse poop. Will I stop listening to what I like? No flunking way! So what's my point? Damnned if I know! Where's that pipe?

  8. deadmandeadman says Oh yeah, and a steady diet of ANYTHING on a long flight would be annoying. Give me the Spice Of Life!

  9. Scotch says Michelle wrote: "I guess it’s like a candy bar . . . okay every once in a while, but a steady diet of it makes you an annoying neighbor on a plane ride." ahahaha Can I borrow that once in a while? I don't want to write it, but I'd like to say it. So versatile...

  10. mktackabery says dm: are you complaining of strange threads on the MOG, mr deadhead? LOL. But yeah, the song is garbage and contributes to the landfill that is our current pop music smorgasbord, but it sounds good in the car. Which I guess is why the youngsters listen, right? To piss us off? Oh wait, that's supposed to be my line since I'm old now . . . ah screw it. But your quote was dead on. There is no justification for this bullshit. I saw a little documentary on We! of all places (I think that's the Oprah network) where girls who "act" in these videos spoke of their lives . . . it is essentially prostitution. Producers find these girls, entice them to be in a rap video with the promise of big money, then they schedule the shoot in a pool at some gangster's huge house, get them all liquored up, shoot the POS video, and half the girls get gang-raped. A few "lucky" girls get to be "in the crew" and appear in a rapper's videos for a series. They get paid a few hundred bucks a day, mostly in the form of blow or crack, and basically have to service the entourage as a reward for having a booty. It made me physically ill. but on another note: quote me of course Scotch!

  11. 2Serenity says I have been totally out of the loop with the current state of hip hop because I cannot believe what has been going on with the misogyny of women especially black women. However, the one thing that keeps everyone intrigued by hip hop is the intoxicating beats that mess with your mind in a hypnotic way. Are you familiar with Hidden Beach? There motto is taking some of these beats and making the songs more jazz without the lyrics that are degrading. Sorry for the long link, but I want this CD. All of them are supposedly the bomb diggity. http://hiddenbeachrecordings.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?cp=1253_10234&pc=HDCD17 I need to go through my journal entries and share what I have written about hip hop. I used to work all up in it as a teenager [worked with BET from 1988 to 1992 with Teen Summit as an unpaid production assistant] so my views about it may be a little different but still I agree with what my sisters are saying bout what is going on. I no longer work in the industry but I am still kinda tied up in it. I know more of the executives in the field than the talent and they are they ones who shared with me that it was not until BET was sold that the programming has gone down the tubes. The entire situation is pretty sad but I just know that in the beginning BET was built on just being a channel for black people. Not really with a mission of what it would do because it needed to raise money. When I was there, no videos like this existed that I remember but I was informed that there were. I just do not remember further I did not watch the network although I spent 4 years of my life there. Thanks for posting! Makes me know I need to organize the little stuff I have written.

  12. mktackabery says 2 - please do share, I think it's important to get stories out there. I will definitely check out Hidden Beach. I love music, but I am not down with female exploitation.

  13. 2Serenity says Response to BET's Hip Hop vs. America http://mog.com/2Serenity/blog_post/115591 This is a post I did while back. The letter was not written by me but 2 young ladies who are a graduate of Spelamn College which is a historically black women's college in Atlanta, GA. I am a graduate of Spelman [www.spelman.com] and that is how I was able to get the letter. At the very bottom of the letter is the email of the ladies who wrote it if anyone wants to be in touch. There are not that many comments on this post but primiarly between me and a few other people. I wish more voices could have been heard but I think the dialogue is very open and honest. I wrote about this too on last.fm and I have a link to that entry journal in this post so take a peep if you like and those comments. I know it is a very uncomfortable and unsettling topic to discuss but if more people are open and honest about their feelings about the situation then maybe something with true people in power in hip hop would not show or allow these videos and further that this music would noe be distributed. It is truly destroying and destructing the black community in leaps and bounds. Oprah had a town hall meeting on this and again the black women featured from the black college were from Spelman. Here is the link from here website: Dialogue on Imus Continues with a Hip Hop Community Panel http://www.oprah.com/tows/slide/200704/20070417/slide_20070417_284_101.jhtml The reason why Spelman was so involved in this heated debated was that the rapper Nelly was going to come to Spelman College to perform and do a bone marrow drive but he refused to discuss his thoughts on a video that he made called Tip Drill where a credit card was drawn threw the butt of a lady. I had never heard of this video or situation until I received emails from Spelman about it. Although I graduated from college in 1996, a lot of the alums like myself keep a connect to the school in order to make sure that students are okay and to let them know they are not alone in the world. It truly is a family situation when you attend a historically black college (HBCU) and that is what people do not understand if they do not attend one. So when people want to attack alums of HBCUs of why so much love for your school, it is your extended your family and your extended self. I hope this helps in any further discussions that you have on hip hop. If I can find any other information that may be helpful please do not hestitate to ask. That is why I came on MOG, but I get in my own little world many times where I am not contributing as much as I should because I am over at last.fm. I truly adore music and I just love sharing like everyone else here. Thanks for letting me post all of these links and contributing to your discussion. It means a lot to help open eyes to situations that are not discussed openly across the board. Have a great day - 2Serenity *** Here is a link from my main blog to a show that Bill Cosby and Alvin Poussaint, MD have done telling people to wake up!** [the best link in the post is the last one which is a transcript to the show] I have to go back and edit them but I need to do work work so I can pay bills! =) http://serenitylife.vox.com/library/post/bill-cosby-and-alvin-poussaint-md-are-taking-a-stand.html
