HHT: Because it's all in the Technique, with a capital T

In keeping with a sense of nonsense, which Shakespeare kindly taught us. . .GET WITH THE TECHNIQUE. Keep thine buttocks tightly squeezed.

  1. dachmo says Oh man I love that stuff, I missed your tags so I didn't realise that was Hugh Laurie. Footlights Revue will get a thorough checking out later tonight. Thanks

  2. ivylander says Once again, proof - as if it were needed - that nobody brings the funk like Stephen and Hugh.

  3. scotfree says hhmmmm - I think I missed some cultural exposure that would have helped me appreciate this more. I mean, I barely cracked a smile. I do appreciate the phenomenon of repeating a single word so many times that it becomes meaningless to your brain. Don't think I've ever seen that elaborated on before, so thanks! On the other hand, it's almost FRIDAY!!

  4. deadmandeadman says I think I'm in agreement with scottfree, in my usual hap-friggin'-hazard way. British Humor is an acquired taste, I guess. Give me slapstick and juvenile toilet/sex grossouts anyday. Who needs clever repartee? let's see a kick to the groin!

  5. dachmo says Scottfree: I've worked in theater for the past ten years so I especially enjoyed this bit. There is a saying in the theater world "never date an actor, only actor's should date actors". Basically they're "sane" people with a multiple personality disorder and on top of that they are attention who-ers. That's got nothing to do with the above but work in the theater world is never dull.

  6. mktackabery says oh dear, well as they say, if you don't get the joke it's not funny I guess. Personally I thought is was truly funny; plus I get a kick out of seeing Fry and Laurie so young! I remember seeing this in college (this was actually recorded in 82, when I was a junior in high school. Please don't do the math on that. Thank you). I think they are playing off the theory of Method acting, where actors are encouraged to get help feeling emotions by putting themselves through some physical trauma. I remember when Coppola shot The Rainmaker with Matt Damon, Damon said Coppola told him to put rocks in his shoes. The physical pain would help him express the anguish the character was going through, or something silly like that. Plus all the silly interpretations of Shakespeare, which is a cottage industry all by itself in the "Academy." God help us.

  7. donia says I love posts like these that remind to go dig out great albums I haven't listened to in awhile. Thanks!

  8. scotfree says One "t" please, wouldst thou offendeth? While I intended to pursue a career in the arts, love and money had other designs on my time and temper. All I'm saying is, I'm sure the bit was funny to some but the source was too dependent on your cultural exposure. All it left me with was Homer's "duh". Or maybe that's who I've become. Pass the doughnuts, wingman. I'm also ribbin' Michelle "cause tomorrow is the conclusion of one of the most melodramatic episodes of Dr. Who that's ever been filmed. I gotta say, I've seen it and it made me cry - twice. Rarely does any cinematic event have that effect on me. "ET" did the first time I saw it, and so did "Reds" - but never a stupid tv show! I think I moved off topic here. Please pass the bisquits. And if you're gonna incorporate Shakespeare and WHOmor, I fancy this more.

  9. ivylander says Not so sure it's exposure to the British that counts most here - rather, as dachmo says, it's exposure to theater people. I was a film major in college, and because film was attached to the theater department, I had to take a couple of acting classes. That patronizing tone, the maddening subjectivity masquerading as common sense, the passive aggression - Stephen Fry would have fit right into the faculty.

  11. mktackabery says scot, of course I am avoiding your Doctor Who references because I am terrified of the crying, the pain, the melodrama. . . oh, who the hell am I kidding? I can't bloody wait, the last two weeks with the Doctor have been MISERABLE. That clip was too funny. Did you park the Tardis on the mee-tah? Are you disrespecting the house of Cooper? OMG. I think I went to school with her.

  15. mktackabery says Crikey, it never even occurred to me that there would be so much fun-making over the Doctor. Seems like Tennant is a good sport. And he has great legs, I must say. I want those heels. I must do a youtube search once my meetings are over with.
