Sunday Covers: Shawn Colvin sings Warren Zevon

Posted over 2 years ago
This morning I thought I'd do a trio of cover posts featuring women singing songs written by men about girls in transition. Just cause, I am. After seven years of not speaking to me, my mother sent me a letter on my birthday asking to see me. I can't promise an Oprah moment. I have a feeling it's going to be more like Jerry Springer, actually. I am very, very apprehensive about what's going to happen. But since my sister's death, I don't have any more patience for family bullshit. All I can hope for is that my mother feels the same. If she doesn't, I guess I'm walking. But anyway . . . I've always loved Shawn Colvin. She always put an edge to folk I appreciated; that New York, black denim, Ray-Bans kind of thing. In 1992 when she released Fat City she was in heavy rotation on VH-1 with a great video to a song called Polaroids. I couldn't find the video anywhere, but I did find a good recording of her singing it live for you. It's one of my favorites of hers.On that record she did one cover, and like all covers artists choose to record, I thought it telling that she chose a song by Warren Zevon, an artist who struggled against music industry expectations about what he should do most of his career. Colvin had been signed right away to big gun Sony, putting her on a major label trajectory that shot her to stardom quickly. Tenderness on the Block is a cute little song Zevon wrote about a teenager approaching adulthood. Colvin puts her signature edge to it with her chunky guitar strumming. Enjoy.

  1. The Serenity Vortex says Good luck with everything! I sorted out stuff with my father recently. I too got pissed off with family crap. Spoke my mind big style, it didn't go down too well lol!! We ended up not speaking for 1.5 years. Things are OK now. We both know where we stand and the respect thing now goes both ways. Hope it works out for you as well mctackaberry *hug*

  2. dermahrk says Good luck with Mommie Dearest. I absolutely LOVE Shawn Colvin. Her last release, These Four Walls, has to be the best CD released in 2006. At least, it is on MY iPod. Although I've heard many of the songs dozens and dozens of times, I just cannot get enough of them. Saw her live last year - another great experience.

  3. ivylander says First-rate tunage, MK. Has gotten Sunday Chez Ivylander off to a most pleasant start, so many thanks. We will be sending out powerful waves of positive energy out to you regarding your upcoming reconnection (or not) with your mother. Having estranged family is such a drag.

  4. mktackabery says Floody: hugs back, boy do I understand your problems with your dad. I certainly didn't think this would go on as long as it did. She hasn't talked to my little sister in ten though, so I guess I should feel, um, lucky? It's amazing how much crap each of us deal with. If anyone knows of the perfect family, please, let me know where they live. So we can all firebomb their house. Mark: once again, we are proven kindred souls. And, of course, damned smart ones. ivy: thanks, it really is a drag. I'm so sick of it, so, at least this will be different, LOL.

  8. Lizziegreeneyes says another thing I love about her - her openess in talking about her own personal demons... takes real guts to do so. She's an idol of mine - her heart always on her sleeve, no matter the outcome - she's there - she's real & she's infinitely more beautiful because of it !!!! Great Call M :) Thanks for a great start to my Sunday MOG !!! I am sending all my good vibes your way for the family reunion... every single one :) *Mark* - that would be Sacralicious !!!!

  11. Augusts1 says Well *HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!* triplet! When was your b.day? Sorry to hear your Mom put a damper on your special day. I can relate, I didn't talk to my Mom for 6-7 years too & my sister for about 11 years or so. Families are SO much fun, not. I'm hoping things go well for you talking to your Mom. I still have a very low tolerance for my Mom & we can't talk about anything of any great importance. C'est la vie. Thank goddess I have a close relationship with my Dad though. I like how comfortable Colvin is when singing the song as opposed to her uncomfortable, darting eyes, talking about the song prior. Nice live clip. Liking the cover too.

  13. Lady Miss Ian says Big supportive hug for you, Michelle. You can do it. I think that one of those gifts you get with aging and going through some major shifts in your life IS that strength to feel like you just don't have time for bullshit anymore. You've posted a trio of very strong women here to buoy you (and the rest of us) up.
