I think my iPod is dead. I'm getting the "sad ipod" logo and it won't go into disk mode, whatever that may be. Also, the inside of it keeps making this runk, runk sound, like an engine turning over. Anyone have any suggestions/special tricks they could recommend for resuscitating my dear friend?

If it's making noises, it's probably the hard drive. Did you get a warranty when you bought it? Chris got his iPod through Best Buy and got the two year warranty through them. It died just shy of two years old, and we got to upgrade to an 80 gig iPod for just the difference in cost, which was roughly $80. Not a bad deal at all.

I've never recovered from a "sad iPod" symbol. You can try the steps outlined by Apple on their website, but in the end I always end up sending it to them. Usually I get a new one back. I must've gone through at least 4 iPods (40g) like this. Don't know if that's typical. Although I NEVER buy warranties, I made an exception after my 1-year post-purchase free warranty ran out and was glad I did.
Got an 80g iPod a few weeks ago. No problems yet. Hopefully they've improved it. Also, the ones that went bad dropped out of my shirt pocket a few times when I was bending over. Since I stopped ever storing it a shirt pocket (pants pockets only), I haven't had a problem.
Good luck!
